They spent the next few days sight seeing, but also doing quite a lot of mission work in areas that had been affected by the fires. The air quality across Canberra was considerably better than it had been, although that still left a bit to be desired. The devastation was unlike anything either of them had ever seen before. Nick was used to bushfires being a threat in an academic sort of way. They happened every year, right across the country, but never before on such a large scale, or so close to home. To give Luna some perspective, he'd told her the burnt area was almost twice the size of Belgium. The two of them spent time talking to the people, and helping out with a few rebuilding projects that were going on. It was an eye opening experience, leaving both of them sober afterwards, and they didn't feel like joking around as they usually did. But it inevitably gave Nick a determination to do his best in the AO, wanting to raise as much money as he could for the people who were suffering.
On the last day of their trip, Nick was up earlier than usual. Luna awoke to hear him moving about in the kitchen, and got up to go and see what he was up to. Their hotel room had a bedroom at either end, and in the middle was a small kitchen and living room combined, where the couches and TV were. Nick was standing in the kitchen without his shirt on, which made Luna's breath hitch in her throat. And he was... was he cooking?
"Are you cooking?" Luna voiced her surprise, moving into the kitchen to join him.
Nick turned and gave her a smile.
"Good morning," he said. "And yes, I am. Why is that so surprising?"
"You actually went out and bought bacon and eggs and stuff?" Luna felt her smile widen.
"Somebody told me that the way to your heart is through your stomach," said Nick. "So..."
"Who told you that?" Luna laughed. "Did I tell you that?"
"No, actually, you didn't," he grinned. "It was an external source."
"Who?" She asked, feeling incredibly curious now. Surely he hadn't asked Rafa about her.
"Well I can tell you one person it wasn't," he said, as if reading her thoughts, and Luna shook her head, laughing. "Anyway," he continued, "Is it true?"
"Of course it's true," she replied. "Who ever you asked knew what they were talking about. I didn't know you could cook."
"Frying an egg isn't terribly hard," Nick shook his head, reaching out to wrap an arm around her shoulders.
"But still... a lot of guys would burn the kitchen down."
"Okay, okay, I'll take the compliment," Nick chuckled.
Luna turned and stood on her tiptoes to kiss him on the cheek, before turning to get two plates out of the cupboard. Nick felt his skin burn where she'd touched him, and smiled to himself.
Once they'd consumed their breakfast, consisting of bacon, eggs, sausages, hash browns and toast (because Nick never did anything by halves) Nick, now with a basketball jersey on, was dragging her out to get in the car, without telling her where they were going.
