Dylan woke up with the worst headache, and frankly, he hadn't even slept all night. He kept replaying what had happened the night before. The way Jordan's hands had felt on his face and the way Jordan looked at him so lovingly. The way his eyes glimmered and the way his voice had been so confident when he let those three words out.I love you.
Those three words repeated simultaneously in his head the entire night. He hated himself for not being able to say it back. He hated feeling like he was a problem that had to be solved. He hated disappointing Jordan because he was the only one that stuck by him through everything he has gone through.
Jordan didn't deserve this, he thought to himself.
Dylan shook his head in an attempt to eradicate his pressing thoughts, but to no avail. In defeat, Dylan got ready for the day. On the way to school, he made a stop at the local supermarket and picked up a box of chocolates and some tulips. Dylan wanted to make up for what had happened the night before by showing Jordan a different act of love.
It wasn't hard to spot Jordan at school that morning as Dylan knew that he could only be in two places, the basketball court or the cafeteria. He checked the basketball court first, and to his luck, Jordan was dribbling the ball in front of the hoop. Dylan stood there for a moment, admiring his boyfriend's incredible talent.
For Jordan, basketball had always been a passion for him. He grew up going to basketball camps, joining basketball little league championships and eventually making it in varsity basketball in high school. Jordan could sense that someone was watching him so he turned around only for him to be correct. He smiled as he saw his boyfriend near the entry doorway of the gymnasium struggling to hold the box of chocolates and the bundle of flowers.
He ran towards him and when he was close he furrowed his eyebrows, "What is this for?"
Dylan blushed, "I wanted to do something special for you after what happened last night. I... know I have feelings of love towards you, but it's just hard for me to open up after... you know."
Jordan caressed Dylan's arm to comfort him. He knew that what Dylan was talking about was a sensitive topic for him. "Dylan, you know you didn't need to do this. Whether you say it back or not, I will always love you."
Dylan smiled. He wondered how he got so lucky with Jordan, "Thank you for being so understanding about all of this."
Dylan set the box of chocolates and the flowers on the bleachers next to him and wrapped his arms around Jordan's neck, pulling him close. Jordan held him tight and placed a soft kiss on his neck. Jordan knew that somewhere inside, Dylan loved him back and that was all he needed to feel okay.
"I actually forgot to have breakfast this morning, so I'm starving for a box of chocolates right now." Jordan said.
Dylan smiled as he opened the box to reveal an array of chocolate assortments. Jordan reached his hand out and picked out the chocolate piece in the middle that was shaped like a heart. "Here, let's share this."
Jordan split the chocolate heart in half carefully and then proceeded to eat one half and feed the other half to Dylan. Jordan admired how Dylan had done all of this for him when he didn't need to.
Later that day, Dylan found himself in his English class. He sat at his usual spot near the windows and hadn't noticed that someone had sat beside him until he turned around.
He mentally groaned, "What do you want, Calum?"
Calum smirked smugly, "You don't have to be so aggressive, Dylan. I just want to talk."
Dylan knew that Calum wanted much more than that, "How much longer will this go on? I'm getting tired of rejecting you."
Calum got a real laugh out of that, "How about this, go to the Ice Cream Cafe with me afterschool and I won't pursue you for a week."
It was Dylan's turn to laugh, "You're delusional if you think I'm going to do that. What am I supposed to tell Jordan, 'Hey babe, can I go to the Ice Cream Cafe with the guy that has been trying to peruse me for the past year,' yeah right."
Calum shrugged, "It was worth a shot," he moved back in his seat and raised his eyebrows, "I can't help but to ask how your little anniversary night went."
Dylan remembered the amazing night that Jordan had planned, and then his smile faltered at what happened towards the end of the night,"And why would that be any of your business?"
Calum contained his smug smile, "I just want to know my competition."
Dylan rolled his eyes, "You're delusional."
That afternoon the group of friends hung out at Jordan's house to start the beginning of their weekend. Dylan had always felt like Jordan's house was like his second home. Jordan's parents adored Dylan and had also pushed Jordan to make the first move in their relationship.
"Dylan! How are you? It's been too long!" Mrs. Philips exclaimed. She scurried towards the group and hugged each of them individually, but gave Dylan a warmer hug.
Dylan smiled, "I'm good Mrs. Phillips, and it hasn't been that long! It's only been a couple of days,"
Mrs. Philips scoffed jokingly, "That's a long time for me! You know us grownups need to be around you guys to feel young again!"
Jordan dragged his hand across his face at his mom in embarrassment. He loved that she was so accepting of his relationship with Dylan, but sometimes he felt like she could be a bit too much. "Mom, we're going to be upstairs," he let out dragging Dylan with him.
The group of friends had dedicated a certain spot in Jordan's room. Jordan and Dylan's spot was on Jordan's bed, while Jeremy and Cara laid down on the couch in front of them.
Jeremey couldn't help but admire Cara. He had been crushing on her for a long time, but he knew he never had a chance. Cara was not a relationship person and seeing her reject every guy that had talked to her Jeremy knew he shouldn't have even bothered.
Jordan noticed Jeremy admiring Cara from afar and smirked as he whispered in Dylan's ear, "Jeremy makes it so obvious that he's in love with Cara."
Dylan smiled and whispered back, "Maybe it's our turn to set them up."
Cara couldn't help but question why they were whispering so secretively, "What are you guys whispering about? If you guys are pulling a prank on me I'm going to be so mad!"
Jordan rolled his eyes, "Not everything's about you, Cara. She really does need some dic-
Dylan took it upon himself to shove Jordan before he finished his sentence for Cara.
Cara's response was to aim her middle finger at Jordan.
Jeremy laughed smugly as he wrapped his hand around Cara's shoulder, "Hey if you ever need a little something-something, I'm always open for anything. There's nothing better than two friends who have chemistry turning it into something more."
Cara's face scrunched in disgust, "I'd rather not."
Jeremy laughed it off, but deep down it hurt his feelings.
In the midst of the conversation, Dylan couldn't help but zone out and listen to the ruthless thoughts in his head. His mind took him to a place of its own, and the more he listened to it, the more it became destructive. Even though he was in a loving relationship with his boyfriend and his friends were the best people in his life, he couldn't help but feel unworthy of it all.
