A/N: Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it! This is a Christmas special chapter that takes place before (Y/n) came to Yuuei. I hope you all have an amazing day whether you participate in Christmas or not!
Also there is some important-ish plot points about Pokemon Fighting Rings here so you should read it even if it's not Christmas anymore.

"Merry Christmas everyone!" You sang, holding a tray of cookies fresh out of the oven, hitting the door closed with your hip. For the past week, you hadn't gone on any night time Pokemon runs, saving up all of your energy for Christmas Day so you could release as many of your friends as you could. Eevee and Pikachu, your two main Pokemon, were out of course, as well as Squirtle, Cosmog, Geodude, Meowth, Gengar, and Clefairy. Usually, you would be lucky if you could get out four small Pokemon, but with lots of rest and cookies, you managed it.
Narrowly avoiding Meowth's paws reaching for the cookies, you took them off the tray and placed them on the cooling rack, dancing to 'All I Want for Christmas is You.' It was the perfect Christmas day - surrounded by all of your loved ones. Except for one thing.
"Aw, damn it," you cursed, rummaging around in a couple of cabinets. "Damn, I really thought we had some." Eevee poked his head under your wrist and looked up at you with wondering eyes. "We don't have any more hot chocolate mix," you groaned. "Pikachu must have drank the reset of it last night." You turned to face the yellow Pokemon who looked away guiltily.
You sighed, brushing off your legs and standing up. "It's okay. I'll just head over to the cafe and use the spare key to take some out of Kosho's secret stash. He'll probably yell at me, but it's fine." Eevee nudged his head against your leg and Pikachu bounced over to you. "You guys wanna come with me?"
With a promise to bring all of your friends back out once you were back, you sent all of the Pokemon back into your inventory except for Pikachu and Eevee, who you hid in your backpack. You would have left all of the Pokemon out, but that would take too much energy that you just didn't have without hot chocolate.
The Sunset Cafe wasn't too far from your apartment, and since you lived in a kinda sketchy neighborhood, there weren't really any other people. You made it to the cafe in about ten minutes and opened your backpack, giving Pikachu and Eevee a chance to stretch their legs. You grabbed the spare key from under the back carpet and opened the door, ran in, and grabbed a few packets of hot chocolate mix from Kosho's secret stash under the sink.
Suddenly, there was a crashing sound from outside. You ran to the back door to find a couple of trash cans tipped over and Pikachu looking around wildly, Eevee nowhere in sight. You ran over to the yellow Pokemon and knelt down next to him.
"Pikachu, what's going on?" You asked nervously. "Where's Eevee?" You had a sinking suspicion that something horrible had happened, but you were holding onto the hope that they were just playing. Pikachu growled into the direction of a forest of trees, where you saw a dark figure carrying something in a bag of his shoulder. You would have sent Eevee straight back into your inventory, but to do that you needed to be near him and be able to see him, neither of which were true at that moment.
Your eyes widened and you took off running in that direction, Pikachu right behind you. Eevee was your very first Pokemon and you weren't about to let anyone take him away. The figure took off running as soon as you did, and you had to use all of your energy and concentrate on following him through the trees. You lost sight of him a couple of times, but eventually came to a clearing that had a small shack-like building. It was a small wooden cottage that had thumping music coming from it and bright shining lights. You had no idea where you were, but you were surprised you had never heard of this place.
"Pikachu," you whispered. "Come here." You ushered the Pokemon into your backpack and zipped it up most of the way. You didn't want to send him back into your inventory just in case you needed to fight someone. Slipping towards the door - which was just a hole in the wall - you entered into the building. The shack was not in fact a shack, but led into a staircase that went down into the ground, and was also the source of the music. There was some sort of bodyguard waiting at the top of the stairs, and you wanted nothing more than to avoid him, but you needed to get Eevee back.
You coughed awkwardly. "E-excuse me, sir." The rather large man looked down at you with a blank face. You weren't sure if he could hear you over the music or even see you through the lights and the fog that was drifting up from the basement. "I need to go down there. Someone stole my-!"
"You got a Pokemon?" The man asked in a deep monotone voice. "Can't fight without a Pokemon."
Your heart dropped to the ground; you had heard of these places before. Illegal Pokemon fighting rings weren't as common as they once had been, but they still went on away from the general crowds. The Pokemon involved were treated horribly and forced to fight each other for amusement. It made you feel sick just to think about it.
"Y-yeah," you coughed, unzipping your backpack slightly to show Pikachu to the man. It was really the last thing you wanted to do, but it was all you could think of.
The man's eyes widened. "Damn, I've heard of these little guys, but no one's ever brought one before."
You grimaced before asking a question. "Did you see any one come in here with an Eevee?" You hoped that you bringing in a Pikachu would grant you some kind of trust with the man. He looked you over for a moment and then pointed downstairs.
"Yeah, some guy down there with this weird purple stapled skin just brought one in. He went down there," he said. You nodded and went down the stairs. It led you into a large basement-like room that had a fighting cage in the middle where a beaten-up Squirtle and Buizel - which you learned from your Pokedex - were across from each other. People were crowded around the edge of the cage, screaming orders at both of them. But when neither of them moved, a man poked in some kind of stick. When it touched the Buizel, it shocked the poor Pokemon, sending him running straight into Squirtle and instigating a fight.
It took all of your energy to look away, but you kept reminding yourself that you had to find Eevee. You looked around for a boy with 'purple stapled skin,' whatever that meant, and pushed through the crowd. You were about to turn around and ask the man at the stairs if the boy had come back out when you saw him. He was tall, at least a couple of feet taller than you with jet black hair and skin that did seem to be stapled to his face. He was talking to a man who looked important and was holding out a squirming Eevee towards him. This was your chance.
You pushed through people and got a few feet from Eevee, who saw you and yelped excitedly. The boy looked over at you and his eyes widened, but you had already sent Eevee back into your inventory and were running back up the stairs. As you did, you also sent Pikachu back into your inventory for safety.
"Get back here!" You heard the boy yell after you. You made the mistake of looking back and saw him pushing people out of the way as well to get to you. Luckily, you made it to the stairs first and ran past the bouncer man, and didn't stop running until you got back to your apartment, only praying that he had given up earlier and hadn't followed you home.
It was safe to say that you didn't have enough energy to take out all of your friends again, and decided to postpone your Christmas excitement until the next day. Instead, you sent out Eevee and Pikachu to make sure they were alright. When they were, you made some hot chocolate and curled up on the couch, turning on a Christmas movie.
You felt horrible that you didn't rescue those other Pokemon, but it wasn't just the two that were fighting; there were probably tens of others just in that one place and you wouldn't have enough energy to get them all. But you made yourself a promise that day; you would save as many Pokemon as you could.
Eevee and Pikachu cuddled up next to you under your warm blanket, and you sipped your hot chocolate with only one thought on your mind.
"Merry Christmas to me."
