I rested my head in the boxed-in four-wheeler car thing Bruce invented. He and Alice were talking about some family thing, I figured out there actually cousins, kind of like me and Marcie. “Now, I know why you guy’s talk a lot.” I mumbled as I looked out the window. “Eh, I thought everyone in my family died, I was just lucky to find Green eyes over here.” He said with a smirk. Alice rolled her eyes. “Anyway, I say the next place we stop, we get food.” He said. I agreed with him; we were running low on food and drinks. I looked up at the open ceiling, the drive has been really boring, and for some reason, I wanted to fight. I was glaring out the window when my phone started to ring, “Hello?” I said, holding it to my ear. “I didn’t know you had a phone . . .” Bruce faded. I glared at him and looked outside. No one said anything on the other end. I was about to hang up when finally the voice said something, “Death follows with every step, pain awakes the shy, but the cure walks amongst us. Find it, kill the guards, and run. The cure will save everything.” And the voice hung up. It must have been on speaker or the voice was loud enough, but the other two heard it. Alice was staring at her hands; “Pain awakes the shy . . .” she faded off. Bruce glared at Alice, “THAT’S the part your scared of!” Bruce said. I put the phone away and sighed. “You guys are so weird.” I mumbled. Bruce ether ignored me or didn’t care what I said, “The cure. I wonder what that is.”
He said, veering past something. I looked back and saw a Zombie standing there. It looked confused before limping after us. “Bruce turn back around.” I said too late. We turned and a group of Zombies stood in front of us. Bruce’s eyes widened, and turned us around and drove right past a four seated Four- wheeler thing. “Hey isn’t that the thing Marcie and Sam were driving around?” she asked. “They must of escaped.” He said, driving off. I was staring out the window when the four wheeler thing completely around and started off that way, I glanced back and saw why; almost twenty or thirty Zombies were running after us, “Ugh, I guess we better find a place to stay after we ditch these guys.” Bruce said. I glared at him but said nothing.
I woke up when a felt a hand on my shoulder. “Bruce?” I asked, still trying to see right. “You were just . . . Um you know, looked kind of . . .” he faded off. I nodded and shoved him back a bit. “Yeah, I’m alright.” I said, giving him a smile. He laughed and walked over to Alice; who was making some kind of plate full of fruit and crackers. She was using a clean blade as she cut the fruits. I caught myself staring at her. I shook my head and looked down at my feet; trying to make out the dream I had. . .
“Come on Kendrick!” said Marcie. We were only 12 and had run into a meadow full of flowers; which was weird. I don’t remember ever coming to this meadow. She was talking about some weird thing, “. . . And then he just stared at me . . . do you think he likes me?” she asked. Dream me laughed, “No, he just wants to make out with you.” I said sarcastically. She laughed and punched my arm, “We’re do weird sometimes.” She said, sitting down in the meadow. Her hair was brown and her dark blue eyes reflected the sun. I sat down next to her, “Well, who wants to be normal?” he asked. She laughed, and I joined her. But then, right before my eyes, she started to melt away. Her skin falling off and an eye ball rolled across the grass. The laugh turned into a high pitched scream. He was standing now, in the middle of a familiar looking city. Marcie had black hair now and was kneeling down. She was crumpling forward and I tried to grab her. The Sam guy I saw previously grabbed my arm and pulled me away.
Then Bruce woke me up. I was staring at my hands for so long I didn’t notice Bruce and Alice was sitting by me, dipping their fruit in some melted chocolate. I finally reached over and took a cracker. Alice smiled at me; she looked tired but not as much as she did yesterday. I know I’ve been sleeping too much and haven’t been involved with them . . . or how ever you socialize with people. I admit it, it had been hard trying to talk with the two members of the group; but Marcie was the only one I really talked to true fully. I looked over the side of the building, the four wheeler thing was still there and it looked like it wasn’t even touched. “We should get going . . . You know, just so we don’t get bombarded with Zombies.” I said as I chewed at another cracker.
We drove on longer and longer, I finally snapped though, “We must have passed her or something! She would be heading back to the Military Base and-“Bruce slammed on the breaks. “Holy Stars of night!” Bruce yelled and started to turn around franticly. My eyes widened and my throat went dry. Too many. “Go, go, go!” I yelled as he stepped on the gas and we flew, then something rammed into the back or our ride. I jumped and grabbed a Pistol, “Alice get me some bullets, Bruce you keep driving, step on it!” I yelled as I pulled myself up onto the top of the ride and took aim. “Alright you SOB’S time to get out of my way.” I whispered and started to shoot rapidly. Before I knew it I was out of bullets’ then Bruce decided to do a sharp turn, yelling “Hold on!” too late. I flew right off, but then I felt arms grab me, I started to panic when I realized it was another guy who looked strangely familiar. He grabbed me and pulled me into a blue truck; also familiar. “Hang on their buddy!” his low voice said as guns shots went off. Everything happened in a blur, cars and a roar of an engine kept echoing in his ears.
I opened my eyes and looked around; Bruce was driving right next to the blue truck which was rushing past buildings. I glanced back and say the Zombies disappear around the corner. The guy who grabbed me put his gun down. It took me a minute to realize it was a Musket; he put it down and turned towards me. He looked at me for a long while, his gray eyes turned to the driver, and “Jonny, you recognize this kid?” he asked. I looked at the driver, my mouth dropped as my uncle Jonny stared at me. He smiled and glanced back one more time before answering, “Yeah, that’s Marcie’s cousin Kendrick!” he yelled and turned around, Bruce still at his tail. I turned and waved at him, he smiled and seemed to laugh as Alice waved back. Bruce motioned for us to pull over to a building. “Hey Jonny, think it’s time for a stop?”
We all sat down on the top of a tall building, the huge group of Zombies caught up with us right as Bruce swung his leg over the side and fell to his knees. We all looked over the edge and watched the Zombies crawl all over the rides. The trucks windows caved in and a dent appeared as one passed over the top. The four wheeler thing was fine, they slipped off before any got in; one even fell and a wave of Zombies fell. I turned around to face the group. My three cousins were sitting apart and staring at the group. I blinked, and stared at Marcie. Her hair was still brown and she seemed alright. I had to remind myself that those were dreams. Dreams.
Dear Marcie
I wonder mostly if this is a dream. I can’t believe I found you. I need to tell you something . . . and what’s up with the dog?
