((Sorry if Proffesor Birch seems out of character.))
"Come on, Ella! We're gonna be late."
A violent flash of color bursted across my half-conscious vision.
"Where are we going, May?"
"To watch the new trainers choose their starter!"
Five-year-old me giggled as I followed the brunette, smiling at the Skitties and Wurmples that watched us with curious eyes.
We dashed down Route 101 back to Littleroot Town, laughing and jumping over ledges that were several feet high.
My eyes started to water at the memory. May had been my best friend before I got shipped off, almost literally, to the asylum.
Before I started hurting the other children.
Before my parents died.
Since May and I had turned four, we had always gone and watched the new trainers recieve their first pokemon. We didn't care which starter a trainer chose, whether it be Treeko, Torchic, or Mudkip. We just cared about whether the trainer would let us play with the adorable beginner pokemon.
May always favored Torchic, while I liked Mudkip.
We rarely fought, but when my parents died, May and I slowly drifted apart.
I had been sent to the orphanage in Rustboro City, while May stayed with her mother in Littleroot Town. Her father was always away at his gym.
I sighed at all of the happy memories that I had been reliving.
I just wished I could live that kind of life again.
One where I could run and play with wild Poochyenas and Skitties. One where I could have started a journey with Eve, collected all the gym badges, maybe even have caught Rayquazza. Forget Kyogre and Groudon, Rayquazza was and is my favorite Hoenn legendary.
"Vee?"
I glanced at Eve, whom had started staring out the window.
"What?"
"Eve!"
I hopped off of my bed to see what she wanted and was startled by what I saw.
Professor Birch.
The Hoenn region Pokemon Professor strode confidently up the steps at the front of the asylum. Strung around his shoulder was a satchel, which clearly contained three pokeballs.
'Is he giving one of the ten-year-olds a pokemon?'
A nurse scrambled up the steps behind him and held open the door for him.
I didn't know what happened after that, but then my usual nurse came into my room, breathing rather heavily.
"Ella, come on. Bring Eve, a guest is here to see you!"
Me?
Hesitantly, I picked up Eve and set her on my shoulder, following the still out of breath nurse.
We came to a door I had come to know as the meeting room.
Periodically, I would get to come in here, usually when the orphanage came to see if I was mentally stable enough, which I was, or if Eve could be given to another, "less psychotic" ten-year-old in need of a pokemon.
The doctors always replied with a simple, yet curt "No."
And that's how I liked it.
I stepped through the doorway to find the professor sitting at the end of the table, with many papers spewed around a Manila folder.
He looked up from one of his papers when I walked in and cleared his throat.
"Ella! Lovely seeing you again. How are you and Eve doing?"
"Great.... For being stuck in a metaphorical prison."
He chuckled and smiled. He didn't seem like how I remembered him, he seemed more confident and more.... proud.
"Well, let's get down to business, shall we?"
I nodded and took a seat across from him.
He toom a deep breath and started with a simple, "I know this is sudden."
"But I need your help."
My eyes widened.
'Why would he need my help?'
"Unlike most trainers, you have a certain aura to you. One of mystery, sadness, and adventure."
I nodded, not knowing where he was going with the conversation.
"I, well more all of the Pokemon Professors, need you to do something for us. I need you to go on a journey. But not a simple journey, oh no! On this journey, I need you to find all, whether we know they exist or not, of the Eeveelutions."
I gasped and looked at Eve.
'Don't Eeveelutions evolve from Eevee?'
Eve had a glint in her brown eyes. She looked ready, ready to explore.
Ready to be free.
"I'll do it."
