Chapter 8: Why Do They Have to Be Blue And Red?

After returning to Petalburg, Danny insisted she have lunch.

We sat outside near the gym, having sandwiches and watching water Pokemon splash around in a neighboring pond.

"It's beautiful out here," Danny exclaimed. "I think today is going to be an interesting day!"

I nodded in agreement. I could feel my stomach boiling in anticipation. "I certainly feel that way too."

She gave a small hum in return and laid down, closing her eyes.

"Hey, Ella?"

"Yeah."

"Whatever happened to your mom and dad?"

I hesitated, yet I knew I could trust her. "They were killed by two men. One was wearing blue, the other red."

She flew into a sitting position. "Did they have strange symbols on their outfits?"

"Yeah... How'd you know?"

"It's just that those guys stole my big brother's starter a few years ago and he died in the wild."

"Oh, okay..."

She stood up and held out her hand. "C'mon. I want to get to Rustboro before sundown."

I accepted her hand and she pulled me up.

We walked west to Route 104 and let out one Pokemon each. Danny let out Waltz, the Ralts she caught, and I let out Blade.

Blade glided along next to us as we peacefully walked down the Route. Waltz was perched on Danny's shoulder and was half asleep.

We passed several trainers, whom were already in battle. As we were about to enter the woods, I was challenged by a blonde, rich-looking boy wearing blue.

He threw out a Zigzagoon and I let Blade battle. I took out my Pokedex as scanned the Zigzagoon, but I forgot to close it and it scanned Blade.

The Professor had already added Blade's eeveelution species to the Pokedex so it stated, "Avion, The High Flying Pokemon. Avion gains the move Fly naturally when it evolves from an Eevee, by maximum trust for it's trainer."

Avion was flexing its wings as the Zigzagoon danced around.

I put up my Dex and the battle started. The boy ordered his Zigzagoon to use Tail Whip and I motioned for Blade to use Fly.

Blade bursted up surrounded in a cloak of clouds and avoided the Zigzagoon's Tail Whip. Blade returned to the ground, hitting the opponent, and taking three-fourths of it's HP.

The Zigzagoon used Tackle and took one-fourth of Blade's HP.

Blade then used Swift and finished off the Zigzagoon.

The boy gave me 960 Pokedollars and left on down the way. I shoved the winnings into Danny's bag and skipped into the woods.

It was immediately darker and we both looked around in awe.

Bug Catchers swarmed the area and a scientist was frantically looking for something.

"Should we go help that guy?"

I shrugged. "Sure."

We avoided a few Bug Catchers and finally came to the scientist.

"Oh where can I find a Shroomish, girls?"

We shrugged and he acknowledged our unknowingness. "Well if you help me find one, I'll give you each a few berries."

We nodded and started searching. When we did come across a Shroomish, the scientist allowed Danny to battle it, then he himself caught it.

"Thank you, girls." He said. "If only there were more of you in the world."

We thank him and he started to say something else but was quickly interrupted by one man in blue-striped, pirate clothes and a woman in a red, Pokeplay-like hoodie/dress.

"We were going to ambush you, but you had to dawdle in Petalburg Woods forever, didn't you?" The woman in red stated.

"We got tired of waiting, so here we am!" The man in blue said.

"You! Devon researcher!" The woman pointed.

"Hand over those papers!" The man commanded.

The man ran behind Danny and I, cowering.

"Hunh? What do you think you're doing? What, you're going to protect him?"

"Yeah!" Danny cheered.

The woman expertly sassed back "Well, no one who crosses Team Magma-"

"Team Aqua!" The man screeched.

"Gets any mercy, not even from a few little girls!"

"Come on and battle us!" They screamed. They both sent out Poochyenas and Blade took up a battle position. Danny let out Nikki and we were ready to go.

The pair across from us commanded their pooches to use Tackle, but Blade evaded it by using Fly.

Nikki got hit and lost half of her HP. Blade's Fly hit the woman's pooch and knocked it out. Nikki then used Ember and made the last Poochyena lose two-thirds of its HP.

The Poochyena then used Growl and was knocked out by a combined move, Swift from Blade and Ember from Nikki.

"Grrr.... You've got some nerve meddling with Team Aqua!"

"Team Magma!"

"Come on and battle us again!"

"I wish I could say that, but I'm out of Pokemon..."

"And hey, we of Team Magma are also after something in Rustboro."

"We'll let you go today!"

They ran off in a trail of grass and dust. Danny and I looked at each other an high-fived.

"Whew... That was awfully close." The scientist exclaimed. "Thanks to you, he didn't rob me of these important papers!"

He seemed to ponder something for a bit but then he held up his finger in a exclamatory way. "I know! I'll give you this as my thanks."

He handed Danny and I each a device. Danny looked at it in confusion.

"It's called an XP Share. I had to strain every fiber of my brain and body to develop this device."

"Oooooh." Danny said in awe.

With a few last words, he departed and left Danny and I alone.

"About those people." Danny said. "Why do they have to be blue and red?"
