Rise and Shine
I woke up in the middle of the night, a nightmare propelling me from my deep sleep.
Immediately I could feel Paul lying against me so I stilled, not wanting to wake him. As I began taking in deep breaths, I grew accustomed to my surroundings.
The interior of the tent seemed even smaller than I remember, yet the ferocity of the storm remained the same. The wind whipped against the feeble layer of canvas as a resounding roar came from every gust.
Surprisingly, I had forgotten all about the newborns, and waking up to it was a grim idea.
"You alright?" Paul asked, tightening his hold on me.
I craned my neck upwards to look at him, "Sorry, did I wake you?"
"Nah, couldn't sleep," He admitted as he leisurely traced patterns against my arm, "bad dream?"
Nodding, I snuggled closer to him, "oh the usual. What time is it?"
"About to be two-"
A deafening wolf's howl cut off Paul's sentence. While I flinched from the sudden noise, Paul just let out a small chuckle.
"What? What is it?" I pressed, already imaging the worse scenario.
"Our neighbors are about to have a fight," He joked, but further explained to keep me in the loop. "Bella hasn't been able to sleep because she's freezing which is making Edward and Jacob super anxious. Jake just called for Cole to take the next shift before the fight and now-"
Paul stopped as he tilted his head lightly, eavesdropping of the conversation about thirty feet from us. Despite me only being able to hear the storm, I know Paul would be able to hear them with such clarity as if they were next to us.
He tensed for just a moment, yet his muscles slackened as he spoke aloud in a scolding tone. "Leave her out of this."
I continued to stare at him, blatantly confused.
"Jacob went to lay down next to Bella to keep her warm and him and Edward started fighting. Jacob was just saying how you're warm because I'm lying with you."
I simply rolled my eyes and settled back against Paul's chest. There is always going to be fighting amongst those three and it was getting tiring to keep up.
"Why couldn't you sleep?" I questioned, changing the subject.
He replied with a shrug. "Just thinking."
"About what?" I pressed. Troubling thoughts usually didn't plague Paul when it was time to sleep, being a wolf caused him such exhaustion that he would knock out as soon as his head hit a pillow.
Paul hesitated and with his eyes gestured to the end of the tent. Lying on the other side, was the love trio. We had listeners and he knew there wasn't a chance we could have a private conversation.
"Me?" I grinned to cut the tension, "Were you thinking about me?"
He smiled and brushed a few strands of hair from my face, " I always think about you. I have to multi-task my thoughts now because I constantly have you on my mind. You kind of get me into trouble when I'm supposed to stay focused."
"Your too good to me," I mumbled with a loving frustration. Paul was always unendingly charming while I couldn't form a coherent sentence around him.
With a quick glance to him, I began to squirm against his grip. Paul didn't know what I was doing, nor questioned it as he simply fought to keep the blanket over my shoulders as I moved.
