This Was No Accident

Obadiah stopped Tony from touching anything. If he did, any investigation could be compromised, and that wouldn't work out too well. After Tony was forced back into his car, Obadiah found a payphone and called police to their location. Tony moved to the passenger seat and waited for Obadiah to come back. That's when he saw it.

There was a camera pointing to exactly where the crash had been, with a bullet hole straight through the centre. This was no accident.

The boy was numb. He stared straight out of the window, his eyes glassy, barely registering the movement. He was ignoring everything he could in any way he could. He needed to wait until he got home - if the bullet hadn't damaged the mainframe, he'd be able to access the backup file and replay the nights events. If it had, Tony would have to go back and take the physical file. That is, if the police hadn't taken it first.

The next day, Tony pulled up the strength to swing a chair around to his desk.

"JARVIS, I missed a camera. Help me."

"You have all the footage I can access, sir." Tony rolled is eyes and tapped into it manually.

"Okay," he muttered. Using a series of codes, he managed to open into the camera. He worked fast - in about 40 seconds, they'd realise it wasn't someone who's allowed access. Another few codes and he was into the remote backup, so he clicked the date - and it was completely wiped.

"What the fuck," he whispered. He got himself out of the mainframe before sighing and rubbing his eyes. "J, who's got the company now?"

"Obadiah Staine, sir." Tony sighed and muttered a 'makes sense' to himself. Obadiah was his dad's long-term ally - of course it would make most sense to go to Obi and then be passed on to Tony once he was legal.

"Has the camera still got the physical file?"

"I told you, sir, I can't access that precise camera."

"That's not what I asked." After a moment's pause, he uttered a

"No, sir. No it doesn't."

Tony walked into the living room and picked up a paper lying on the windowsill. He scanned the headline, and it was something to do with his parents, so he tossed it on the coffee table and looked at the piano. In the few short days of no use, it'd collected a thin veil of dust. He gently wiped the surface and saw the shiny black of it glow through. He clapped his hands to get the dust off and sat down on the seat.

He could see the most frequently played notes, mainly in the centre 'c' octave. He'd never bothered to pick up an instrument, but maybe now was the right time. Just as he'd rested his fingers on a 'g' chord, Obadiah walked in.

"Do you play?" Tony pressed gently on the notes and a pleasant, happy sounding chord rang through the room.

"No. Thinking about it, though." Tony stood up and walked away from it. "What. Why are you here."

"I live here too, Tony."

"No, you live in a house a half hour walk from here."

"You can't live alone."

"I don't. I have J."

"What, the machine? Tony, this-"

"Sir, I assure you, I am not a machine. I am proof of Artificial Intelligence, my full name is Just A Really Very Intelligent System"

"Thanks, JARVIS, not helping me prove my point in the slightest."

"Of course, sir."

"Mute. Look, I'm okay, I can look after myself. I have for the past 17 years, why does it have to change now."

"Because before you were a minor living with people who were overage, now you're a minor living by yourself. It's illegal, Tony, and as owner of the company-"

"That I inherit in 4 years-"

"-it would look bad if you lived by yourself, so-"

"YOU DON'T CARE!" Tony yelled. He was breathing heavily and glaring at Obadiah.

"What?"

"You don't care, you didn't before, you never have, just get out."

"Tony-"

"Or I'm going off the grid. Trust me, I know how." Obadiah sighed and turned around. As he did, he said one more thing.

"It was nobody's fault, Tony. You gotta know how to let people in." Tony bit the corner of his lip and looked the other way, crossing his arms over his chest. Obi looked back at him and decided not to interfere. Tony wanted to be left alone, so he was gonna be left alone.
