I held the bucket of water on top of my head balancing it carefully so I didn't spill it .it was a piping hot day with the sun shining with all it's glory down on the Earth .I decided to stop and rest in the cool shade of a large mango tree that shaded the road from a yard . it's widespread branches offered coolness and shade and I took the bucket carefully off my head and settled it on the ground and sat down warily on the strong thick roots of the tree .
I loved ST.Mary not only because it was the parish of beauty , but because it was the only parish I have ever really lived.my mother had always had difficulty finding work and this parish had suited us just fine .my school ST.Mary high School was not far from where we lived and mother had a job at a local supermarket right at the mouth of our district.
We were not rich but we got along just fine with what my mother earned as it was only the two of us in the two bedroom house and even though we had no running water I was just glad to be with my mother.my father had passed away two years before and my mother had gone back to dating in hopes of finding someone worthy enough to be my father .
I picked up my bucket and continued on my way home .at home I emptied the water into the large barrel at the back of the house and then ate some bread and butter for dinner. That night when mother came home she didn't came alone she came with a white man.i stood starring at him surprise because it was the first time a white man ever came to our house.
Remembering my manners I said " good evening sir"he looked at me and smiled and said to my mother"your daughter is a nice girl Jules .hi my name is Steven Henry what's your name?"I quickly answered "Alexia Miller".
"Come dear please sit down"my mother said as she gestured to the couch. Turning to me she said"Lexi please can you get us some water dear?" With a quick yes I was off to the kitchen . As I poured the water I thought about the man and hoped that what ever was going on wasn't something bad.
I gave them the water and the man took it greatfully and asked"so Alexia which school do you attend?"I sat opposite them and answered "the St Mary's high school".he nodded slowly and said "would you be interested to get an opportunity to study overseas?". I blinked at him and said "of course sir I have always dreamt of going to Harvard University ". He smiled and said to my mother"you have a brilliant girl Jules . that's wonderful Alexia because your mother has decided to come back home with me overseas as my wife".
I looked at both of them a huge smile on my face. I was happy for my mother because she finally got a chance to be happy again and also excited at the prospect of studying overseas.", that's wonderful news .mom I am so happy for you ". She smiled at me and said "I just want to give you an opportunity to achieve something in life dear ".I nodded smiling at the bright light of the future but little did I know what was in store for me.
