SOTD: ALLEYWAYS BY THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
~
"We've been had"
I looked up as Nate spoke and rolled my eyes. That was the understatement of the century.
"How did he know?" I mumbled into my hands as the sounds of shuffling boots filled my ears. The moment Nate delivered the news of Penn's arrest, we rushed down to the police station hoping Mark could buy Penn some time.
"How are we sure he did know?" Stephen gave me a look from where he sat beside me and shrugged, "How do we know that Morovitz just isn't a sick son of a b~"
"Stephen" Des hissed sounding more like a mother than ever before. I shoved my hands into my pockets in frustration and felt something odd; pulling the object out, my jaw dropped.
"What the hell is this?" I whispered staring at the playing card in my hand.
"It looks like a playing card" Stephen noted pointing to the backside that was etched in elaborate swirls of black and white. I gave him a glare and he shrugged looking to Nate.
"It's a joker, so what?" Nate said dismissively taking a look at the card as if I were stupid.
"I didn't put this here" I insisted suddenly finding it very hard to breath, "I don't even own a deck of cards"
"You don't think...." London trailed off but I already knew what she was thinking.
"Adam never even got close enough to touch me, I made sure of that" I murmured looking around quickly.
Des, Stephen, London, and Nate all looked at a loss for words and I knew they were just as confused as I was.
"Let's not get crazy, it's probably nothing" Nate finally murmured turning as Mark rejoined us from where he had gone to try and see Penn but I could tell by the look on his face, he had had no luck.
"They won't let you see him?" London jumped out of her seat with sad eyes.
"That's not it" Mark looked down confused before looking at us again, "Penn's refusing to speak"
"What?" We all gasped at the same time.
Why would Penn refuse to speak to Mark? Mark was trying to help him!
"That can't be right. Penn~" Just as London was about to finish her thought the front door to the police station opened and a cold gust of wind blew in. We all looked up and my vision went red.
"Morovitz" I sneered ready to fly over and punch him in the face, until I registered who was behind him, "And Principal Reynolds?"
~
"I believed him" I kept my gaze level with the ground as Principal Reynolds spoke in fear that I would kill Morovitz if I caught sight of him, "I believed he was done with this stuff"
My heart broke at the way Principal Reynolds' voice cracked and I sighed.
"Penn doesn't do drugs anymore Principal Reynolds, that much is true" I spoke quickly and he gave me a tight smile,
"If that were true we wouldn't be here, now would we Mrs. Connor?" His tone was that of a man who was in pain and I wished I could help him somehow.
"Bartholemew Reynolds?" A police officer walked over to us and Principal Reynolds nodded,
"You can see your son, now" Without a moments hesitation, Principal Reynolds jumped up and followed the police officer.
The air, the moment he left, was filled with red hot fury. London was physically shaking trying to control herself with Adam in the room and the rest of us were staring daggers.
