NATE

"So you don't know why he bailed you out?"

None of this was adding up; there had to have been a reason that Mr. Reed would waltz into Penn's holding cell and tell him he had posted his bail...His own father hadn't even posted his bail.

"That's exactly what I just said, have you always been this redundant?" Penn snapped giving me a death glare. I rolled my eyes and sat down in the seat across from him at the dining table,

"Excuse me for finding it slightly odd that some random man came and posted your bail when your own dad wouldn't"

Penn's dark eyes got even darker and I noticed the way his pale hands clenched on the table, "My dad would have posted bail for me in a heartbeat...money is just tight, right now"

I watched as London practically melted from where she stood at the fridge and she came rushing over to him, "I'm so sorry"

Des cleared her throat from behind me and I almost jumped as I had forgotten she was even still there.

"Are you sure he didn't say anything of significance? Rack your brain, Penn...This is important"

Penn turned away from London for a second and put a look of sheer concentration on. After a moment he shrugged with a shake of his head before his eyes widened, "Well...there was something"

We all watched him expectantly, "When he came into the cell, he looked completely distraught; like he hadn't slept a wink. He wasn't even wearing a tie...he always wears a tie"

I was about to spit out a comment about how useless he was until he snapped his fingers, "Oh! And he asked me if I might have had any clue where his child was. At first I gave him a weird look cuz how could I possibly know anything about the Mascara wand and the bed wetter?"

Despite myself, I laughed out loud at his nicknames and he gave me an amused look, "But then I realized he was probably talking about the one child I actually knew"

"Evan" I murmur rubbing my jaw and staring at Penn, "And you have no clue where he might be?"

"What are you, a cop? Quit with the questioning"

London gave me a quick look and I clamped my mouth shut. Although Penn had shed a bit of light on the situation, I couldn't ask him any more than a normal person would have because, despite everything, Penn couldn't know. He couldn't know the reasoning behind us actually being in Belmont because it would ruin everything. We had kept mum on the situation regarding Andrea, Stephen, and Mark but there were still certain things we needed answers to...Answers that he obviously wouldn't be able to give us.

"Sorry, we just really wanted to help" I sighed hanging my head slightly.

Great, the one person who we actually had on our side was basically useless.

"Sorry, dude" Penn gave me the closest thing I had ever seen resembling a smile towards me, "To answer your question, it depends"

My eyebrows rose slightly, "Depends on what?"

"Well, one time in the tenth grade Evan got into a bit of an argument with his dad and 'ran away'; their mom was flipping her shit and everything. I had been at school that day handling...business, and there he was practicing drills on the field" Penn murmured, "If this is something like that then maybe he's doing that again?"

"But wouldn't his dad have thought to think of that?" Des weighed in giving Penn a look, "The guy isn't stupid"

"And maybe that's what makes him stupid. Maybe he's been looking in all the wrong places because he thinks he's figured it out, but he's more lost than ever"
