The door frame broke in splinters. Kurio rammed into the door again and again. I covered my ears with my hands. Reanon had left me alone. I wondered why he didn't take me. I forced my eyes to stay open. Kurio shouted a final warning and the door fell into the room. The room was thick with dust. A figure stood in the doorway. Kurio walked in cautiously.
"Atraya?"
"I'm here, behind the door."
Shards of wood lay at my feet. My face was covered in dust. Shakily I stood myself up and turned in a circle. The dusty room was slowly settling. I walked away from the door. Instinct told me to back up, at this point I wasn't going to argue. Kurio moved past the wood and windows.
"Why don't you say something?" I wondered.
A ping hit my heart. I'm not any better than he is. We were both nervous, unsure. I ducked behind the couch.
"Reanon?" I asked softly.
If it was him I'd be safe asking, if it wasn't I'd still be safe. Kurio ran up to my voice and I saw him. His brown hair filled with dust. A scratch on his left cheek, still fresh. I stood from behind the couch and grinned. Kurio embraced me in a hug then we slipped out of the room. He placed my phone in my hands and held them to his chin.
"Bring it everywhere Atraya," we locked eyes.
"I will, promise," I dropped the gaze and looked at my feet.
Kurio gently dropped my hands. We walked through the empty hallway. It was lined with dusty lockers and we paced by two busted doors. Kurio looked at me sheepishly when I stared at them.
"I wasn't entirely sure," he admitted.
I nodded. I enjoyed his company but I needed answers. Snow should know more. She was hiding something from us. I had a gut feeling.
***
"Snow!" I called down my hall.
Kurio had reluctantly left me in the hall. I had claimed I'd spoken with Snow and she was waiting. Kurio argued but I convinced him to go.
"Why can't I talk to her also?"
"Kurio you need to find out all you can about the sorceror, magic-e, students at this school," he ran his fingers through his sweaty hair.
"You sure your okay?"
"I'm okay, thank you,"I hugged him gently, "now go."
Watching him walk down the stairs I remembered the elevator. I almost shouted to him. My hands waved in the air. A warm hand covered my mouth. I twisted from the grip.
"Snow?"
"Come with me," she grabbed my hand,"hurry!"
Her black bang concealed half her face. I saw her whole face though. Stricken with horror, confusion...
Snow plowed down the hall, dragging me with her. She moved faster than she looked she could. I knocked into series of chairs that rested beside small oak tables. Embarrassed at my poor running and dodging skills I began to slow down. I couldn't breath. I touched my pocket and fingered it. The one thing I hated to admit. I wasn't going to share but it is essential to this story. I need an inhaler to breath. I can't run. To be honest I was surprised I hadn't collapsed today because of it. I pulled from Snow and pulled it from my pocket. I shook my blue and white inhaler and held it to my lips. Woosh. I took a few breaths then walked.
"I'm sorry, I didnt-" her voice sounded so loud, even though it was a whisper.
"Know. Yes I know that," I interupted as quiet as I could.
I turned to look back, you could get lost in this place. It was impossibly gigantic. Snow steered us to a blue door. The surrounding doors are all brown or white. This one stood out. I looked around the clean, organized hall. Nervously glancing from Snow to the door and then the hall.
"Well, open it."
