Diction: 6

Grammar / Detail / Description: 4

 Conflict / Character Struggles: 7

Title and Novel Summary: 8

Creativity / Originality: 6

Cover: 8

 Final Score 52/80

The main character's struggle is heartbreaking. How he loses both his families and feels responsible for the second time really makes the reader connect and sympathize with him. The stakes are really high, which is great for this kind of story. The plot is intriguing, with the main character getting embroiled into this larger political situation/revolution. However, the story breezes through the narrative too quickly. It relies too heavily on dialogue, particularly for all of the exposition. The character's emotion and trauma is not tracked well-enough and becomes glossed-over. The plot points the narrative hits work well, but overall the main character finds out information and gets what he wants and needs way too easily, without much effort or know-how. The story needs a lot more setting and description to really make the world come alive, especially in this historical setting that seems really cool, but the reader can't yet picture it.

Second Place goes to!!:

Conflict / Character Struggles: 8

 Final Score 59/80

This story is rich with culture which makes the world seem grounded and real. The character's struggle of losing her family and seeking revenge, though familiar, is something readers can engage with and root for to succeed. The hints to the romance to come in the early chapters is done really well. It doesn't happen to fast or too easily. The story could use even more description and world building, and some of the plot points could be made clearer. The antagonist seems too convenient and the author doesn't take enough time to build up their motivations and actions, which would help readers understand the world a bit more.

I am pleased to reveal our First Place Winner!!!:

Miss Swashbuckler by: theteenageglitch

Conflict / Character Struggles: 9

Title and Novel Summary: 9

Creativity / Originality: 7

Final Score 71/80

This story quickly delivers on the promise of its title. There is swashbuckling, gender role reversals, pirates, and the raging sea. The characters are intriguing, funny, relatable, flawed, and engaging. The scenes and actions are well-described. The turning of the tables seems like it comes a little too quickly, but overall the story is paced really well. Giving the characters a little bit more substance beyond their roles on the ship, some hints as to their desires and what more there is to them, would be useful in the first few chapters, but the backstory in chapter five works nicely to flesh some of that out. The writing is really natural and easy-to-read, with no grammatical issues. Overall, a fun and adventurous read.
