MAGNOLIA WALKED THROUGH THE FAIRGROUNDS, ADMIRING THE BOOTHS AND THE PEOPLE. . .

Everyone seemed to happy that day, and that made the redhead smile. A few minutes later she found Anne talking with Diana.

Magnolia greeted her friends and hugged them tightly. "So are we going to talk about Gilbert?" Anne asked after she pulled away.

"Yeah, 'I don't think so?' isn't an answer." Diana chuckled as she spoke.

"It's just—" She trailed off. Feelings were so confusing, she wished she could understand hers.

She looked at Diana to see if she was mad at her for not answering but instead, she found her staring at something behind Magnolia.

"Oh, Gilbert—"

The redheaded girl turned around and saw Gilbert. But he wasn't alone.

He was with a blonde girl, much taller than Magnolia. She had a fuller looking body compared to the redhead's scrawny one, she also looked older and more mature.

Her breath caught in her throat at the sight. Was Gilbert courting someone? She looked away, sadness swelling up inside of her for some reason.

She nervously smiled. "Um, I'm gonna go find my family, see you guys later." She waved at Anne and Diana and quickly walked away.

Her heart rate sped up as she turned to take another glimpse at Gilbert and the girl once again. She had just tripped and Gilbert caught her by the waist. They laughed it off and walked into a tent.

She bit her lip harshly, turning away. She didn't like how she felt, not one bit.

Magnolia loosened her dress collar and pulled out the necklace that was hidden under her dress. She stared at the magnolia tree necklace that Gilbert had given her, she felt a twinge of pain inside of her. She sighed and tucked it back where it was.

Suddenly, she remembered the cake contest. She was probably late so she rushed to the tent where the contest was being held and found her family.

"There you are!" Her mother exclaimed, the judges were already tasting the cakes just like she suspected.

"Sorry, I got distracted—" She cut herself off when she locked eyes with the girl Gilbert was with earlier.

Gilbert turned to her and introduced the redhead to her. "This is Magnolia, my classmate, and family friend."

She beamed. "Hello, Magnolia. Like the tree, right?"

The redheaded girl blinked, she wanted to run away but she couldn't.

"Magnolia, this is my—uh—"

"—Winifred," She held her hand out for her to shake, and she took it with a smile.
