"Hey, Rei! I'm gonna make myself comfy." Nagisa pushed himself into Rei's house and flopped on the bed. Rei skipped practice today due to "an upset stomach." Coach Sasabe gave us some yen to buy him something and check on him.
"Why are you all here?" Rei asked.
"Coach sent us to check up on you." I answered. "How are you feeling?"
"What?" He seemed a little confused.
"We brought you a get well gift." Makoto said, holding up the grocery bag.
"But I wasn't-"
"I'd say you're feeling a lot better!" Nagisa cut him off. "Ms. A and Coach were pretty worried about you, too."
"Everyone... was actually worried about me?" Rei asked in surprise.
"Of course, it was the first time you missed practice." Haru answered. "But is it true? Did you talk to Rin?"
"I may have told them everything, sorry." Nagisa apologized, referring to earlier today how Rei actually skipped practice to have a word with Rin.
"Was it because I told you about our past?" Haru asked.
"No, not really." Rei said. "I have my own reasons. I needed some answers, but I'm done worrying now."
"So that means you guys can start focusing more on the team." I smiled.
"You mean I'm a part of it?" Rei asked.
"Of course!" Makoto said. "Where would we be without your talent and brainpower?"
"He's right. Every single member here is irreplaceable." Nagisa agreed. "Think you're ready?"
"Yes!" Rei smiled. I don't think I've seen him smile so genuinely before.
"Great, let's take a snack break!" Nagisa exclaimed.
"I didn't realize melon bread was gift material." Rei commented.
"Coach only gave us so much money, but these are still tasty!" Nagisa insisted. "Here, eat up!"
"I'm not hungry-" Haru started to say before Nagisa shoved a melon bread in his mouth. Haru's face quickly started turning blue.
"I think he's gonna pass out!" Makoto exclaimed. "Rei, go get him some water!"
"Actually, I have something even better than water." Rei said. "Behold, barly tea! This combo has been in my family for-"
"Who cares! Just give him some!" I said as Haru started swaying back and forth.
"I think he's dying." Nagisa mumbled, his mouth full of melon bread.
"Why are you so calm about it?!" Makoto asked. "He's slipping, come on, Rei!"
"Right, sorry!" Rei apologized.
"Don't die on us!"
~~~~~
"That's too funny!" I laughed as Makoto told me over FaceTime about poor Rei accidentally ordering multiple dishes at dinner. Currently, the team was staying at a hotel where the tournament was. Kou, Ms. A, Coach and I are heading out first thing in the morning.
"I felt kind of bad." He chuckled.
"Hey, it's getting late. Shouldn't you be getting to bed?" I asked. He just stared off as if looking for the right words to say. "What's wrong?"
"I just really hope we qualify for the finals tomorrow." He answered.
"Just remember how hard you've all practiced." I shrugged. "You've all made it this far in such a short time. I'm sure you can pull off one more win."
"Hopefully." He smiled. "Thank you."
"Oh, is Haru there?" I asked.
"No, he went out for a quick run."
"Oh, okay, I'll just text him then." I yawned. "Well I'm going to head home. At least try to get some sleep, okay?"
"Yeah, goodnight."
"Goodnight." I smiled and hung up the phone. I sent a quick goodnight text to Haru before heading on to my empty house, nervous yet excited for our regionals relay tomorrow.
