I sat at the foot of my bed, staring at the wall in silence. The quietness is both lonely and peaceful. My life is such a mess and to top it all off, there's nothing I can do about it. It's as though I don't have control of my own life at all.
I hear my mom on the phone, talking to someone in the background.
"Faith?" Mom asks from the kitchen.
"Yes, Mother?" I responded.
"School just informed me that you barely have enough credits to be a senior next year," she says, not sure whether to be relieved or concerned.
Mom puts down the phone to make dinner. She hums a gentle song within the grace of her voice.
I pick up the phone and called Grandma Turtle. It's been a while since I've last spoken to her. "Grandma Turtle?" I said in a low voice.
"Faith, my dear what's wrong?" she asks. "Your voice sounds like a whimpering dog."
"I just wanted to hear your voice. A lot has been going on at school recently and I miss you," I say truthfully.
"Oh my, would you like to share what's been bothering you?" Grandma's voice raises into concern.
"I keep getting blamed for things I didn't do and the teacher won't believe me," I exclaim.
"I think you need to talk to the principal about this," she says trying to find a reasonable justification to help my situation.
This school is crap anyways and I know that won't help. I'm just going to accept it, and to stop her from worrying, I said, "Okay, Grandma, why didn't I think of that!" I was acting cheerfully and relieved.
"Ah, wait, Sofia wants to talk to you, I'll hand her the phone."
"Faith? I've got some news for you," Sofia says excitedly.
"What? What's the matter?" I respond, puzzled as to what this importantly shocking news could be.
"There's a new transfer student named Cookie, he's a junior."
"Um... Okay? And..?" I was confused as to how he was important.
"I dunno, I just wanted to tell you. I think he would make a great friend. It's his first year from Japan and since you two are in similar situations as new students, you should find him with some of our other friends. He wears a black suit and tie."
I changed the subject to what we were going to do about summer.
"What about camping?" Sofia suggested.
"In the dead of heat?" I thought.
Sofia and I ranted on about summer stuff. Then we started to make plans how to get there.
"We can have Mom take me to her job in the morning and we can meet there," I said. It was a good plan.
