'Niamh, did you know that you'd be shot?' Eddie asks Niamh. Niamh looks down at her abdomen.
'Oh.' Niamh laughs. 'I did not feel that.' Everything goes black.
.
Niamh's eyes slowly flicker open. She sees bright lights and squints. Once her eyes have adjusted to the light, she looks to her side and sees Charlie, her social worker, and Street. She tries to move but pain sears through her body.
'Hey, try not to move.' Charlie tells her. 'You've had major surgery.'
'Why didn't you say you'd been shot?' Street asks her.
'I didn't feel it.' Niamh replied weakly. 'I just thought I'd hurt myself when William knocked me to the ground to protect me.' Her eyes then widen with realisation. 'William!'
'He's fine.' Charlie assures her. 'A few weeks to a month of physical therapy and he should be back to normal.' He adds. 'You, however, will be here for at least two weeks.' Niamh sighs, frustrated. 'And we need to talk about this.' He points between Street and Niamh. 'And about you going to see your mom without permission and clearance.' Niamh looks down. 'But we'll save that until you're better. For now, Jim will be able to come and see you whilst you're here.'
'Thanks.' Niamh smiles slightly.
'I will leave you two alone. I'll be right outside.' Charlie states. He stands up and walks out of the room. There are a few minutes of silence.
'How are you feeling, after yesterday?' Street asks Niamh.
'I dunno.' Niamh shrugs. 'I haven't seen him since-' She then trails off. 'I didn't even know they were still in LA. Last I heard, they'd moved to Chicago.'
'I can look into it if you-' Street says.
'No.' Niamh shakes her head cutting him off. 'It will only end badly. In their eyes, I asked to be abused, I asked to be raped, I'm the reason their family was starting to fall apart, I'm the reason that Olly died. They want revenge and they'll do anything and I mean anything to get that.' Her heart rates starts rising causing the machine to beep faster. A nurse walks in.
'Is everything okay?' They asks.
'Yeah.' Niamh nods. 'Not really a fan of hospitals.'
'Would you like me to give you a sedative to take the edge off?' The nurse questions.
'No.' Niamh shakes her head. 'I'll be fine.'
'Are you sure?' The nurse makes sure and Niamh nods. 'Okay then. Well, since you're awake, I will get the surgeon to come in and talk to you.'
'Okay.' Niamh nods and with the the nurse walks out. She looks at Street. 'Does mom know that I'm here?'
'No.' Street shakes his head. 'Since she's not your legal guardian, she doesn't need to know. However, I will speak to Charlie and see what he can do.' Just then, Will Campbell, the surgeon, walks in.
'Hi.' Dr Campbell smiles. 'My name is Dr Campbell, I preformed your surgery.'
'How bad was it?' Niamh questions.
'You lost a large percentage of your blood volume so we had to do a transfusion. The damage was mainly to your spleen. Your splenic artery had been severely damaged. There was a bullet that was lodged which was stemming the bleeding which is why you didn't bleed out.' Dr Campbell explains. 'I noticed that you had some scar tissue?'
'I was in an accident about two years ago. I had internal bleeding amongst some other injuries.' Niamh replies. 'It was a tough recovery.'
'This recovery is going to be tougher.' Dr Campbell warns her. 'You're at risk of infection and you'll be on anti-biotics for the rest of your life to reduce that risk.'
'How long until I can get back to normal?' Niamh questions.
'It's going to be at least three months until you can get active again.' Dr Campbell responds. 'You'll have to take it easy until then. We're going to keep you in until we're satisfied that you can walk unaided and until we can remove the stitches.'
'So I could be here for up to a month, maybe longer?' Niamh raises an eyebrow. 'Great.' She mutters.
'We're going to keep you in this room for another few hours for some close monitoring and then we'll move you somewhere more comfortable.' Dr Campbell adds. 'Your social worker has said that he will go to your care home and pack you a bag so that you can wear your own clothes and pyjamas and so that you have stuff to do.' He finishes.
'Erm- this is going to sound silly, but, when I'm on my own and a nurse or doctor needs to give me medication or check on me or whatever, can it be a female?' Niamh requests.
'It doesn't sound silly.' Dr Campbell shakes his head. 'And of course.' He nods. Niamh smiles gratefully. 'I have to go and round on my other patients but I will back to check on you later.' With that, he leaves.
.
It's been a few hours. Niamh has been moved to a new room and Street returned to work. Charlie had returned and dropped off her bag before returning to his office to do some paperwork about what has happened. Niamh is sat up in the bed reading one of her books. She looks up and sees Daniel and Callum - her old foster brothers.
'You didn't think you could hide from us, did you?' Daniel smirks and they both stalk into the room.
'We know you've been talking to the police about us.' Callum says. They both stand either side of her bed. Niamh tries not to look at them as she reaches for her call button. 'I wouldn't do that if I were you.' A switch flips.
'Get out!' She screams, pulling at her IVs and ripping them out of her skin. 'Get out!' She thrashes around in her bed. She pulls the pulse oximeter off causing the code alarms to blare. Doctors and nurses run into the room.
'She tore her stitches!' One nurse shouts and they attempt to calm Niamh down.
'Get them out! He needs to leave! They need to leave!' Niamh continues to shouts. 'Tell them to get out!' A doctor runs in with a syringe of a sedative and injects it into Niamh. She slowly starts to calm down and slips into an unconscious. A nurse puts pressure on the open wound.
'Let's get her back into surgery and see if she's torn any of the internal stiches.' One of the doctors says. 'Call her social worker and let him know what's happened. Let's also get psyche involved. She wanted someone out - she was in here alone.'
