The table was silent as the two men sat down and ate. Both grew up in a 'no cellphones or work at the dinner table' rule, so between them, it was kind of an unspoken command.
The silence however, was a little bit awkward as far as Dalais was concerned. Across from him sat a man he knew when he was just a boy. Now Dirac was all grown up and far more distant than Dalais had thought he was going to be.
"How do you think these six months are going to be like?" His first attempt to break the silence was shattered as all Dirac offered him was a shrug. "If that's the case then I guess it's going to be long."
Dirac looked up with his spoon halfway to his mouth. "What does that mean?"
"You know, you acting like we weren't once best friends."
"We weren't."
"My bad."
"It's true. You were Elizabeth's best friend, never mine."
"Huh. I guess I misread the sleep-overs, the basement video games and all the times I went to all your softball matches, even though I hated softball."
"You did that for her. To get closer to her. You had a huge crush on my sister." Dirac laughed, thinking he had made a joke. Only that Dalais didn't find it funny.
"Has anyone ever done anything for you?" He asked, carefully assessing Dirac's reaction.
"I do things for myself." He pointed out proudly.
"That's why you totally disregard when someone does anything for you, right?"
"What?"
"You remember when that girl you were dating... Melissa Thot..."
"Ted. She was Melisssa Ted."
"I don't care. You remember she dumped you, claiming you were gay?"
"Yah well the evidence was there."
"It doesn't matter, Dirac. You didn't want people thinking you really were gay... and I stuck my neck out for you... to prove you weren't."
"All you did was lie to everyone by telling them you were gay and made a move on me but I shut you out."
"I shut down getting laid all throughout high school because of you."
"You wanted to get laid?" Dirac's voice sounded a bit off.
"That's not my point." He pointed out.
"You were my best friend... and you being in the situation you were in made me jump to your rescue... because somehow I thought you'd do the same for me."
"You were my sister's friend, of course I would've."
"Is that the only reason you'd do it?"
"What do you want me to say, Dalais?" He pushed his plate from him. "That I would lay my life down for you because I am head over heals inlove with you?"
"No damn it. I want you to tell me why you shut me out of your life like I never mattered to you."
"Don't be ridiculous."
"Am I? You ran out of that church and I've never seen you since. I've tried calling you, going to your damn hotels and with every attempt I got nothing but silence. Every time you went to see Elizabeth and I'd come by, you ran out so quick you almost ran me over with your car once. My parents died, Dewitt and you weren't there for me." Dalais realised he was getting mad, so he calmed himself down. "So tell me Dirac, was I that easy to erase from your life?"
"I was scared, Euless."
"Of what?"
"Of everything and everyone. You have no idea how confused and scared I was. I didn't want everyone to hate me... or judge me or see me different. I didn't trust anyone. I didn't want you to hate me."
"For what?"
"For being gay."
"What?"
"That's why my father disowned me. Because Rogue found out I'm a fucking fag. You know what my dad did when he found that out? He arranged a marriage for me. I tried to stop him but he told me I had demons and all I need was a good wife to cleanse me off my sin." He spat in disgust.
"Dirac I..."
"You want to know why I had to distance myself? Because my mother took my father's side and they had me committed to an asylum meant to turn gay people straight. I spend two whole months in there... being forced to watch gay porn for 8 whole hours with my hands tied behind my back and my dick hard every single time, not allowed to jeck off...
Then when you're "reformed" they get a naked man to touch you and suck you off to prove you can't be hard, that you are restored. Every week I failed their reformed test until I had to learn to control my erections. Dalais no one knows what I went through during that time...
When I got back, my wedding was planned out and I was to get married in two days... two days I couldn't even think straight yet still I had to get married. For what? To make Rogue Dewitt proud." He made a laugh so full of bitterness, Dalais could chew on it. "Well you know the rest." With that, Dirac stood up and left Dalais in utter shock.
Dalais ran up the stairs behind him but Dirac had already locked himself in his room. Dalais gave it a soft knock but Dirac didn't answer.
"Look, Dirac can we talk?" Silence.
"Okay I get it... why you ghosted me... but can you come outside?" Silence.
"I'm really sorry I wasn't there for you man, and that I didn't realise what was going on. I meant it when I say I'd stick my neck out for you. You are my family Dewitt."
Dirac pulled his pillow and started sobbing like a little girl, careful to not make a sound incase Dalais was still out there.
Opening up his mouth seemed to have opened some very deep wounds from his past and the pain was excruciating. He never should have said that, never should have mouthed off like that.
Now all the dollars he had spend in therapy were to waste because all this feelings felt like he was reliving it all.
How did Dalais happen to release emotions he had burried? Emotions he had hid even from his sister. He knew why, but he was just too stuborn to admit it.
He was still in love with that man. His twenty years old feelings haven't recided a bit... even after trying so hard to.
He had just six months to deal with this torture, and he had to keep himself out of this house as much as he can if he wanted to keep himself sane.
For the next few weeks, Dirac was barely in the house. He sometimes slept in his office just to avoid seeing Dalais and it had worked but not enough to keep him from losing his mind.
The more he worked, the more depressing it all got which was strange because work was always what pulled him back.
He stared at the black computer screen in his office, his eyes puffed up for not getting enough sleep for two weeks. Every muscle on his body hurt bad and his ulcers were back due to stress and malnutrition.
It didn't help that each time he snuck into the house, the whole place reaked of its owner. Every corner, every room was covered with the amazing scent of Dalais Euless and Dirac was growing crazier by the minute. He needed a drink. He didn't care how long it had been, he just needed to stop thinking for some time.
