FIRE AND ICE

CHAPTER ONE

"Michelle" I heard my name being screamed out, I knew it could be none other than my mum."Michelle" I heard her scream again, I quickly got up from my not so comfy bed and headed towards the living room if a place where two cushions and a rug can be called a living room, I saw my mum busy getting ready to go to work. She didn't notice my presence so I quickly walked up to her murmuring a good morning, she slightly turned her head towards me and I notice a frown on her face meaning I had overslept.
       "You overslept Michelle" she said in a not so happy tone"I know u don't have a cell phone but at least you should know how to go about your daily routines" she glanced at the wall clock on the living room.
     " See, it's almost half past 8 and you have done nothing, this is so unbelievable"she remarks
           I knew I had to apologise quickly otherwise these lecture would go on for the next few minutes so I braced my self up" Mum am really sorry I overslept, I went to bed late last night and I wasn't feeling all that well, you know these is the first time these is happening and I promise it won't happen again" I apologised sincerely, I looked up at her and then she sighs" ita okay Michelle, I forgive you but please dont let it happen again" she said while picking up her bag and sliding it on her shoulder.
   " Yes mum, it won't happen again" still yawning slightly. She immediately went into her room and came back with few amount of money and handed it to me. I looked at her curiously knowing she doesn't give me money except if she is traveling for some days or when she wants me to buy food stuffs for the house, I go for the latter. I gently collected the money from her and she also gave me a piece of list,
    "Get these from the nearby supermarket as usual but only after you are done with your chores" She said while heading for our wooden door that led outside. I nodded my head and bid her farewell and headed back to my room to freshen up. I went inside the bathroom only to find that the tap wasn't rushing. OMG, I hate this, now I have to go about the day without taking my bath, I was really annoyed. Why couldn't the government make provision for water and light for the vulnerable?? I thought out.
       I went back to the living room not knowing what to do now since there was no water but I wonder what mum took her bath with, I was just about going to change my clothes into something not odd like squeezed shirts and sweatpants when I heard water rushing from mother's room. I quickly ran into the room and found the tap rushing, I breathed out a sigh with excitement and I knew then that my tap must have gotten damaged. I quickly picked out my outfit if I could call a short flay gown an outfit, I took my shower brushed my teeth and got ready almost forgetting mother's rule. Get these from the super market only after you are done with the chores. I quickly darted into the kitchen seeing all sorts of plates scattered on the floor and on the counter, I immediately started washing them making the whole place clean again, sweeping both mine and mum's room, wiping the dust off our tiny television and after am satisfied that am all done, I smile to myself thinking have just one more thing to do before going to work, I grabbed the money and the list and headed outside feeling the morning breeze on my skin, I closed the door and locked the door saying in my mind" the day has began again".
             I slowly and steadily walked to the supermarket noting that today was a Saturday and most people would still be in bed by now.the rich maybe. I thought. I brought up the list to see what was inscribed in it,milk....cereals,i wasn't allowed to finish reading the list when suddenly a car wheezed passed me causing the list to fly away. I immediately got furious and started following the list but it only got worse cause I never saw it again. I was annoyed by the driver of the car but then the car stopped and an elderly man emerged from it. I felt less annoyed as he apologised to me saying he was in a rush and had to go urgently. I instantly forgave him and he drove off in his car. I was still worried about how I will buy all the foodstuffs without the list but I finally made up my mind that these wasn't the first time I was sent to the supermarket and I knew everything needed to be bought. Feeling a little bit relieved, I made my way to the supermarket and bought the items and hurriedly walked home knowing am almost late for work. Dropping the items at home and locking the door, I made my way to the restaurant where I work at precisely McDonald's.
     On reaching there I sight my best friend Liana already at wotk, I immediately tied my apron and met them after getting a glare from the boss, I muttered a sorry and went into the kitchen.
    " Hey Liana, what's up" I smiled.
      " Everything's good Michelle, how are u doing? You are quite late for work today" she said while grabbing a knife from the set and slicing the onions.
   " Well, you know the usual, I had to go to the supermarket to get some few things before heading here" I replied helping her slice the lettuce. I noticed her smiling and beaming and I knew something was up," So tell me what's the good news"
       * I thought you will never ask" she stopped slicing the onions and looked at me" Remember the scholarship we both applied for ?" She asked
" Of course I remember, the scholarship to the most prestigious and richest school in town, I will never forget that, so tell me what's up, did they reject us?" I asked her knowing she wouldn't be in these kind of mood if we were rejected.Well I just thought I could ask.
  " No silly" She said slapping me playfully on my arm" The results are out and we are supposed to check and see if we got the scholarship" She replied going back to slicing her onions.
" Wow, that's really great news" feeling a bit anxious whether we got it or not" but you know I don't have a cell phone so how can I check??"
" Don't worry bestie, I will check it for both of us, just finish up here then we can go check it" She said and I felt relieved that at least I don't have to go about pleading with mum to let me use her phone.
  After few hours of tiring work and running errands, we finally completed our work for the day. I was excited and sad at the same time, excited because if I got accepted then that would be a life changing opportunity for me and sad cause I may not get accepted. Nevertheless, I braced myself for the worst. I and Liana were currently sitting on one of the tables at the restaurant since it was empty and we were closed for the day, she brought out her laptop and started doing her thing while I stayed six feet away from her praying. Oh God please let us get the scholarship. I was nervous as a wreck twisting my fingers and praying. Suddenly I heard a scream from where Liana wa sitting and my heart started beating rapidly.Did we pass or fail?  I kept asking my self those questions and I immediately walked towards Liana hoping and praying for good news.
