"And with great pleasure, I reward the Officer of the year award to DCI Susanna Corley." Finnigan's highest ranking police officer, Supt. Miyashita said with a beaming smile on his face as he handed a second hand plastic trophy to the DCI who stood next to him.
A few moments passed until the Superintendent actively gestured at the front of the stage.
"Do you want to say a few words?" He asked.
"Nae, not really." She responded after a little hesitation.
Eve-Anne looked to her Sister, who stood next to her. She was holding the baby, Rowan, who was sleeping peacefully, and had the hand of the slightly older child, Elena, in hers.
The stage was now empty, and Eve-Anne spied to two police members hugging happily.
"I think she's done really well." Jessica said, rocking her arms a little to keep Rowan sleeping happily.
"Yeah. I do too." Eve-Anne agreed, her expression remaining straight as always.
"Oi, ye two." The DCI said, as she pushed through the crowd of people.
"I'm watching you, don't forget it." She said to Eve-Anne, her thick Scottish accent growing thicker by the second.
"Mum, I'm sorry." Eve-Anne said.
"Yer watching Rowan on Saturday." Susanna said, almost like a threat, but Eve-Anne knew she would remain unbudged on her decision.
She sighed.
"Sorry." Eve-Anne forced a slight smile and looked down at Susanna.
"Anyway, M's going to say something important." She dismissed Eve-Anne's excuse she was about to submit by waving her hand a little.
"Now, more news." M went back up to the stage, and spoke into the cheap, probably second hand, microphone, "Joining our police force will be two detectives investigating the well known White Rose Ripper murders which has gained our small town fame as they started here before going around the UK."
M was gleeful, it would be quite pitiful for any normal town, but the police force was stretched thin as it was.
"This also marks the 25th anniversary of my move here to become the Head of Finnigan's police force."
The crowd erupted into a cheer, Susanna was one of those hyperactive people in the crowd.
Eve-Anne sighed, resisting the urge to leave as it was but she just pulled at the bandage covering her arm instead.
"What's the story of that anyway?" Eve-Anne asked her Mum over the despicable sound of noise.
"He helped in a serial murder case in Japan 35 years ago, he moved over here for a fresh start and 10 years later decided to help us out in Finnigan." Susanna barely took her eyes off of M for the whole thing. Eve-Anne had ways of finding out what was going on, but the last time she read Susanna's mind it was very unpleasant.
"Anyway, that's it for today, and please use the new suggestion box outside of Kinley Hall."
M tried to turn the Microphone off but failed, causing a loud buzzing noise that made the crowd cover their ears.
"Does anyone know how to fix this?" He questioned the audience, although Eve-Anne was unsure whether anyone heard him or not.
With a quick nod Eve-Anne used her ability to switch the speakers off.
"Fixed it." He uttered, as he left the stage and went to talk to the sound manager.
The crowd quickly dissipated leaving only Eve-Anne, Jessica, Susanna and the kids.
"Mum?" Eve-Anne asked, "Have you met those two new detectives?"
"Not personally, but I hear they're good."
Or foolish, Eve-Anne thought. They might be the same detectives heading the case that she saw earlier.
She'd have to change her plans even more than she thought.
"Evie?" Jessica grabbed Eve-Anne's arm, and handed the baby to Susanna. "Let's go to the shop."
There was a moments silence before Eve-Anne responded.
"Sure." She said with a hint of confusion.
Eve-Anne was pulled down the street by her sister, eventually turning a corner and stopping.
"The shop is the other way." She said, looking at Jessica with annoyance.
"I want to know what's up with you." She said, stepping away a little and crossing her arms.
"Nothing." Eve-Anne stepped back and leant on a wall.
"Your friend even asked me to check on you."
"Talya?" Eve-Anne paused and placed her hand on her side, "She's always worrying."
"Yeah, but it seems reasonable this time." She said.
There was another moment's silence as Eve-Anne figured out what to say.
"Why have you been talking to my friends, I thought you hated them all?"
She looked up a little, and shook her head a little bit jokingly.
"Hm, not all of them."
Eve-Anne sighed, and they started heading towards the shop again slowly.
"Do you reckon those new detectives will actually do anything?" Jessica asked, changing the conversation.
"I doubt it."
