I groan looking at my phone screen, which reads noon. It's fucking noon, who is at the door? I push my hair out of my face as I leave my room. No one else is home right now, everyone had work. I leave all the lights off and don't dare go near the blackout curtains. Uther said one of the reasons he picked this apartment is due to the dimmer switches in every room.
The banging on the door makes me hiss in annoyance. "I'm coming!" I shout unlocking the door and opening it. I almost hiss at the bright sunlight at the end of the hall. I almost close the door but I just leave it cracked. "What?" I spit out.
"I am Tyler and this is Dutch, we are here on the behalf of the Emperor," the tall blonde says. I open the door letting them in before slamming it close.
"You can adjust the lights however you want," I mutter leading them into the living room. "Everyone else is at work."
"I'm assuming you're the Uthers newest, eh, daughter?" Tyler asks while turning the lights on half power.
Tyler is about average hight but seems to be pretty buff. His strong Cupid bow on his top lip catches my attention along with his eyes. They are blue with an underling silver tint. I tilt my head studying him. How old is he? How long has he been a vampire? His eyes seem to be halfway between mine and Uthers. Standing beside him, a few inches shorter than him, is a darker colored boy with thick curly hair. His eyes are a few shades of blue darker than Tyler's. He must be Dutch and he looks to be fifteen.
"I am, I'm Vanya Vincent," I introduce while sitting on the couch. Both watch me like they want to know something. Tyler opens Dutch's backpack and pulls out some papers before handing them to me.
"Those are your vampire records, we normally send them in mail but we needed to talk to Uther," Tyler explains sitting on the other couch. Dutch sits down beside him while fiddling with his fingers. I glance down at the papers, the first having an over elaborate seal on it. I look over at the clock again, letting my shoulders sag.
"He won't be back until four."
"Maddy?"
"Seven, there was a seven car pile up so the morgue is kinda backed up."
Tyler runs a hand through his hair before letting it rest on the back of his neck. Dutch keeps toeing the ground like he's trying to distract himself. "Is everything okay?"
"Perfect. We can wait for him right?"
Reluctantly I nod my head. I'm not sure it's the wisest thing to do, to deny someone who works for the emperor. I feel like that could cause more trouble than it would be worth. That's what Caleb used to call me, more trouble than it was worth but he loved me regardless. He let me move in with him and I, oh god. I killed him. I killed my boyfriend of five years. "Are you okay?" Tyler asks. I can feel my eyes water.
"I killed him."
"I think her emotions just kicked in," Dutch whispers.
"I killed him like he was a fucking juice box! Holy," I stand up shakily not sure what to do. "I ate my boyfriend."
"I know," Tyler says reaching across the table to grab my phone. I slide down, sitting in the floor. Flashes from waking up in my coffin, going home, and drinking all the blood out of Caleb. I've dated him since I was fifteen, he's all I've ever really known. Caleb was always there, doing everything for me. He got me my job at the cafe, he got me all of my clothes, he got us the apartment, and I killed him.
I can still hear him saying how much he loves me and how sorry he was. I can still hear him begging me to forgive him while I drained his blood from him. How could I do that? I dig my nails into my legs while trying to figure out how I'm feeling. The loud piercing sound of an ambulance makes me grip at my head trying to block the noise. I feel like a weight is settled on my chest and my head is about to explode. I feel like I'm drowning in my emotions, the fear, regret, and remorse.
I jump and hiss when arms wrap around me. "It's just me," Uther whispers holding me to him. His touch seems to calm me down making the drowning almost disappear. "There for awhile I was almost certain your emotions wouldn't kick back in. It's kinda impressive it took almost three weeks for it to come back."
"Why did I kill him?"
"Because he done you wrong. It's what is expected from our kind, kill someone from your past." He holds me for awhile until my eyes start to get heavy. Jerking back up, I'm in my bed, unsure how I got here. I let out a shaky breath as the events run back through my head.
I rub at my head as I walk back to the living room where Uther is speaking to Tyler. "Has she had any slip ups?"
"No, Vanya has been a wonderful vampire. Her second through fifth feeding were a little messy but besides that she's doing really well with the transition," Uther says smiling as I join him on the couch. Uthers silver eyes seem to never leave Tyler's figure. Tyler is watching me.
"Three weeks, how's the feeding?"
"She's gone from thirteen weekly to seven. She has had several group feeding and is bonding with the rest of our coven. As much as I would like to believe that emperor Kronos is interested in my new member, I doubt that's why you are here."
Dutch, sipping his glass of blood, looking over at Tyler with one of those glances. The kind of glance you share together when there's a giant elephant in the room. "Where do your loyalties lie?"
"With Emperor Kronos," Uther replies instantly. Tyler and Dutch both look at me with questioning looks.
"Emperor Kronos, like Uther says," I reply. Something about these two seem like they are looking for something. Tyler smiles while letting out a sigh. He seems tired, like he's been traveling a lot. Has he been traveling from coven to coven asking these questions and investigating?
"As one of Kronos' oldest friends, I must tell you to be weary of any covens approaching you. We fear some have strayed off to follow this man going by the name of The Prophet. If any of your coven members come across any of these traitors please contact us."
"Of course, I'll tell my family. Will I be needed?" Uther asks.
"If things keep progressing it maybe smart to move back to kingdom for awhile though with the upcoming power transfer I would suggest you prepare for it. I would also suggest some training for all your coven members, especially Vanya," Tyler explains. He looks over at me giving me a comforting smile, showing off his fangs. Sharp and white.
"I will. If anything is needed don't be afraid to ask. My coven will be there in a moments notice if needed."
"Your loyalty is appreciated. I hope you recover well, Vanya," Tyler says standing up. Dutch follows him to the door. Once they leave I turn towards Uther.
"What did I miss?"
"Just some catching up, nothing to worry about, go get cleaned up for hunting," he says gently shoving me off the couch. I smile back at him, but a sinking feeling has taken root in my stomach. Something doesn't feel right.
