A couple of months later, Josefine had made some other friends, thankfully these were girlfriends. Ingrid and Heidi: a nice pair of girls in her class. Ingrid had really big green eyes and a darker skin, with beautiful long brown hair, it wasn't hard to understand why Tom thought she was hot, she was taller than her and so was Heidi the blondest blonde Josefine had ever seen, the girl's eyes were the brightest blue too but she kept them hidden behind her pair of glasses.
Josefine was talking to them one day; they had agreed to help her improve her German because she was so tired of smiling at the guys and laughing when she didn't understand; and the topic that day shifted from schoolwork to the ever so feared 'do you have a crush?' talk.
"Oh, come on!" Heidi said, fixing her glasses by pushing them up. "I know who she likes." Ingrid turned to Heidi from her seat next to Josefine.
"Do you?" Ingrid sounded almost hurt. "You told her and not me?!"
"No!" Josefine protested. "No, I didn't tell anyone because I don't have a crush!"
"She does too!" said Heidi, insisting.
Tom walked by and asked Josefine if she was going home with them after school that day, something she had been doing a little bit less often since the two girls had become closer to the Spaniard. Josefine said she would and Tom placed his hand on the Spanish girl's shoulder just for a brief moment before walking away again.
The two girls looked at one another with sparkling eyes, Josefine knew that look all too well.
"NO. I do not like him!"
"Oh my...please, don't deny it!" Heidi said. "You're always hanging out!"
"And you haven't even noticed that older guy who keeps helping you carry your books... he's just hopeless, isn't he?"
"Georg?" Josefine couldn't believe it. "Wait." She whispered, bringing the other girls closer in order for them to listen. "You think I like Tom." Both girls agreed rather loudly. "And that Georg likes ME?" Heidi looked doubtful at that statement, but Ingrid nodded like her life depended on it.
"Ja, that guy is all over you." Josefine thought about it for a second. It couldn't be...
"But you don't have any bad taste, Tom is really something..." Ingrid pointed out.
"You think? I don't like him that way, but I-I've never thought about his looks."
"Oh, Jo...but you must have noticed!" Ingrid kept talking. "His eyes, his hair is not so cute...but he has a handsome little face, doesn't he?"
"I really can't get over the hair." Heidi said in a quiet voice with an eyebrow raised and confusion on her features. "Or clothes..." Josefine laughed at that while Ingrid gave her friends a glare. "I'm sorry but Jo should go for the older one. He looks better, give him a haircut and you're good to go."
"But his hair is so soft and shiny; I would never cut that off!"
"Jo, don't listen to Heidi. Tom is totally better."
"Hey, don't turn this into some Argentinian soup opera; I'm not into either of them!"
The thought was hunting her throughout the day and when she begged Gustav for a piggy back ride - which she loved - she made no sound at the first negative answer, instead she mumbled an 'ok' and walked ahead of the group, lost in thought.
The weight of her bag was soon lifted from her shoulder as she only used one strap and in her peripheral vision she noticed Georg taking the bag on his shoulder.
"Hey, I can carry you a couple blocks..."
Gustav offered, but Josefine said it was fine, which alerted everyone else that something was off.
"Are you ok?" Tom asked, stepping next to her.
She nodded and then Bill took his brother's place.
"Do you feel sick?" Bill's worry was present on his voice as he put an arm over the girl's shoulder and tried hard not to freak out. "Is it the weather?" He covered her nose with the scarf she was wearing, a red one she had made herself a couple of years back.
"No, Bill." She smiled and pulled Bill's hand away from her face. "I'm not feeling sick." Looking around, it was obvious the question on everyone's minds. "I'm worried. I think I'll go home to finish my sociology project, I haven't done much and it's eating me alive..."
The guys relaxed a little, knowing she was a bit of a nerd and agreed on letting her go.
"I'll walk with you; make sure you don't get lost." Georg offered, much to Josefine's displease.
"That's perfect." Bill kissed her cheek goodbye and so did Gustav and then Tom, although she felt a slight blush rise in her cheeks when Tom backed off. "Finish it soon, okay?"
Josefine smiled at Bill and walked with Georg in awkward silence until he spoke up.
"So, for real: what is it?" They stopped at a red light, unable to cross as the cars passed in a blur.
"Nothing, just my project it's -"
"Eating you alive, I know." He cut her off and put his arm over her shoulders as they walked across the street. "But it's not that, and I know you probably already finished that. You bragged about it the other day."
"You're not gonna tell them?" Georg shook his head no. "The girls were just telling me that there is this guy... and that he likes me." The boy smiled and nodded for her to continue.
"And so?" She shrugged. "I'm sure he's not the first or the only one in school." This made Josefine blush crimson red. "Hey stop!" she was walking further away, attempting to hide her face from her friend. "Isn't this your house?" Georg said with humor.
"Oh." She turned and smiled without showing her teeth in embarrassment. "Yes. Indeed, this is the construction I live in." She kept her head down and looked away, still hiding her red cheeks.
"Your house." Georg walked with her to the door and as she opened it he put her bag in her shoulder, "There you go."
"Thank you, Ge." They said goodbye and as her mother came out from the kitchen, Georg yelled from the sidewalk in front of her house.
"It's a shame; you look so cute when you blush!"
