The truth was that I felt a slight something for Matt that I couldn't place since we didn't really got to hang out much, but when the campaign was done he made it obvious that he was going at it for real and while Georg left shortly after our second date it was also obvious that Tom wasn't having any of it, which was confusing to me.

Kate was always there when I visited the guy's home. It felt so weird to be around them when I was talking to Bill about something that happened at work or about my paintings which were done and in New York by now.

That day, I had to book my flight to Spain; I was going to spend Christmas with mom and her boyfriend, and the New Year with dad while the boys left to Germany for the holidays.

After booking the flight, I checked my emails and read the one from the gallery owner in New York; he had loved my paintings and was glad he'd be showing them the next January. I immediately called the number I knew by heart, Tom's number, without thinking.

"Hello?" He picked up the phone sounding annoyed, I looked at the phone screen and realized by the picture of Tom's smiling face on it that I had dialed his number and then I also noticed it was way too early to be calling. "Hello?" He repeated.

"Hey Tom, how's it going?" I felt so stupid; I had been talking to him so little ever since Kate appeared in the picture, and now here I was playing dumb with him on the phone.

"What do you want? I was sleeping." Tom complained.

"I meant to call Bill..." My confession was followed by silence. "Tom?"

"I'm here." He murmured unwillingly.

"I thought you'd fallen back asleep..." I let out a laugh. "Anyway...I booked my flight home and I got an e-mail from New York."

"Oh, really?" He was grumpy but I preferred to ignored it.

"Yeah, they loved the paintings!" I couldn't hide my excitement. It was the first time I was showing my work at an important gallery. "I just can't believe it; it's like all these years are paying off finally!"

"I'm happy for you." He said, but he sounded everything except happy.

"Are you sure?" I felt colors wash away from me while confusion took over.

"Well, thank you Jo, I'm glad you lowered yourself to my level and decided calling me, because you don't seem to do that anymore, and maybe that's why I'm so happy, because you finally got it right and left me alone."

"Tom, who are you talking to?" I heard Kate on the background and allowed myself to have some dignity.

"Fuck it." I didn't even raise my voice, just hung up on him and looked back at Allison fixing a young girl's hair. "He's an ass!" I told her, to which she agreed.

Mom was gorgeous like always, I had hugged her for a long time when she opened the door for me, I had insisted on getting home alone and surprised her when I jumped at her in the middle of the beautiful afternoon in Seville. She had gone back to her job as an accountant and as I had heard so much about Fernando – her boyfriend – was a man a couple years older with blonde hair and tanned skin, as much as it felt weird to see your parents with someone else, it made me happy to meet the guy who my mother was marrying to.
