When Debby walked into the apartment around three hours later, she was met by a trail of pink and gold glitter leading to the bathroom. The door was closed and light was shining through the bottom crack. Debby shook her head slowly and laughed to herself as she listened to Josh hit a very bad and very high note to a Christmas song.
"It's not even Thanksgiving yet!" she called out as she went into the kitchen and set down a small bag of groceries. She took a can of soup out and set it by the stove before searching through the cabinets for a pot.
"I don't care!" Josh hollered back. "It's cold, therefore, it's Christmas."
Debby's face broke into a smile. "Great reasoning there, Sherlock."
A few minutes later, just as the soup was heating up, Josh turned off the shower and came out dripping wet with damp clothes. His purple hair, which Debby had helped him dye, was fading more and more everyday into a soft pink color. Josh kind of liked it, even if it did get him some weird looks from parents with tiny children. If he was being honest, that was mostly why he kept dyeing it. Old people's reactions were the best in his opinion.
Josh walked into the kitchen and stood behind Debby, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.
"You got my favorite soup," he said softly.
Debby smiled. "I told you I would."
"Thank you."
"Of course."
Josh let go of her waist and opened up another cabinet to find them some bowls and spoons. Once found, he handed them to Debby and she ladled the soup into the bowls for them. They were quiet as they both retreated back into the living room, as they did for almost every meal, and sat down in the couch next to each other. They did own a kitchen table, but they never used it besides putting mail and the stray pair of socks on it. They didn't even own any chairs for it.
"Josh?" Debby asked as she turned on the TV.
"Yes?"
"Why are you putting so much salt in your soup?"
Josh smiled down at his soup and fought back a laugh. "I crave that mineral," he whispered.
"Oh my God," Debby cried out. "I'm living with the world's biggest loser."
For the remainder of their meal they were silent, occasionally laughing at the lame attempts at jokes that came up in the dialogue of the show they were watching.
"What's with all the glitter?" Debby asked once they were done with their meal.
"Tyler's aunt is getting married and he offered to make some decorations, so I went over to his to help him out a bit," Josh explained.
"Okay," Debby replied. "Why is it all over our floor then?"
"Well, if you give two grown men some glitter, it only takes about a few minutes until they start throwing it at each other," Josh admitted. "You should see Tyler's place."
Debby laughed and moved closer to Josh. Josh put an arm around her, letting her slowly fall asleep next to him after a long day of work. He brushed a few of her bangs out of her face and was suddenly reminded of that summer all those years ago when she had bleached her hair. That had been the first time he ever truly realized just how beautiful she was. It wasn't that she wasn't beautiful with her natural hair, but more of the fact that Josh could still see how gorgeous she was even after something about her drastically changed.
In her sleep Debby moved closer to Josh's side. It felt so right to Josh to have her there next to him, but something also felt so incredibly wrong. He couldn't place it. All he wanted to do was figure out what exactly was going on with him and Debby, but he couldn't think of anything. They were still close, they still shared jokes, they still loved each other, but something wasn't right.
When it got to be too late into the night, Josh picked Debby up and carried her into their bedroom, tucking her in before climbing into his own side of the bed. He let out a sigh as he closed his eyes and tried to push away all the feelings of wrong that were floating trough his head.
Little did he know that Debby had fallen asleep thinking almost the exact same things.
