Lillian leaned over the wire fence, trying her best to angle her phone at the adorable farm animals grazing in the exhibit. Two goats were eating excitedly from the hands of a child at the other side of the fence. Mitsuki stood closely to Lillian, particularly interested in the llama sitting under a roof.
"The goats aren't going to look at the camera without food," Mitsuki informed her girlfriend.
"I just wanted to—" A gust of cold autumn wind blowing against made her shiver. The phone slipped out of her hands into the enclosure. A gasp erupted from her mouth. Her girlfriend slapped her hand against her forehead in response.
"Wh-what do I do?!" Lillian exclaimed. While the spectators were slowly moving on, it was the animals she had to worry about. The last thing she wanted was a goat gnawing on her phone when it was no longer interested in the pellets it was being fed.
Mitsuki glanced around frantically, her eyes falling on a large stick on the ground. She quickly passed it to Lillian.
That'll work, Lillian thought. A subtle way to bring the phone back to me without drawing too much attention.
She crouched down, stretching the stick forward. Much to her dismay, the phone was farther out of reach than she expected. Lillian reached her arm as far as it could do, letting out grunts as she unsuccessfully attempted to push her phone closer. Mitsuki was quietly murmuring cheers of encouragement, though they did little to extend Lillian's reach.
I just need to do a large lurch, Lillian thought, taking a deep breath and lurching her arm forward as far as it could go. She let out a yelp as the stick fell from her grip. She glanced up at Mitsuki, horrified that their plan had failed.
Mitsuki patted her shoulder. "Don't worry, babe. I got this."
Mitsuki surveyed the area, finding that there were only a few children still feeding the animals on the other side of the enclosure. She then hopped the fence in an instant. Lillian watched excitedly, admiring this heroic side of her girlfriend.
The sparkle in her eyes and hope was gone in a flash as Mitsuki's hand gripped around the stick. She was back over the fence in an instant and happily dropped the stick in Lillian's hands.
Lillian's eyes narrowed.
"Wha—" Mitsuki was interrupted by Lillian's hand thumping her head.
"Why didn't you grab the phone, dumbass?" Lillian exclaimed.
Mitsuki's eyes widened. She turned her head, her mistake clearly visible. "Oh, shit!"
