A glimpse of the past

Stavros

I stare at the night sky. There are no stars blinking and the moon is hidden beneath the thin layers of clouds.

"It's definitely going to rain" I broke Grand and Moth's silence.

Moth looked up and held out his tiny palm, trying to catch raindrops.

We've just finished swimming back and forth the riverbank, we climbed the peak of the nearby mountain and now the three of us are eating the fish we roast.

"It's that time of the year again" Grand puffed out a deep breath and munched on his share of fish.

"Yes it is" I replied as I throw the pebble I'm holding to the river, disrupting the peaceful water.

Moth looked at the both of us with confusion.

"What is with this time of the year?" He asked.

I watched him pick up small pebbles and strode towards me, mimicking what I just did.

I watched him throw all pebbles he gathered. Grand sit beside Moth as we stare blankly on the serene river.

Grand sighed "It's that time when I have to go, when the sea is at its calmest state and our ship can already venture out" Grand said

Moth fully turned his head to Grand "You're leaving?"

Sadness was evident in Moth's voice

"Yes, but it would be for a very short time" Grand replied as he tilted his head and stared at Moth

"Are you crying again?" He asked dumb founded

Moth shrugged his shoulder and breathed deeply "No I'm not" He answered

Grand tapped his back, trying to comfort Moth as much as he can.

"Don't be silly! I'll be back in no time, the sea is not as limitless as the sky, I'm sure we'll be back soon" Grand added

Now Moth has finally toughened his voice "You better be" He lowly said

Grand looked at me, he's waiting for me to spill it, but I can't and I don't know how to start.

I furrowed my brows at him and slightly shake my head, but Grand's face is pressing me to blurt it.

"I think Stavros has something to say too" Grand said and I was shocked, I'm not ready to tell Moth that I am leaving tomorrow.

Moth hummed and turned towards me

"What is it Ros?" He asked softly and I resigned myself at that instance.

I need to tell him. It would be unfair for Moth if I would just leave him hanging, besides my training won't take long.

"Moth listen carefully, I want you to be brave. Alright?" I asked while I stare at Moth's eyes

"Alright" there was a pinch of hesitation in his voice.

"Tomorrow I'll be leaving too, but it's for a short period of time...shorter than Grands absence" I told him, but his eyes were already in pain

"But why?" He asked

"My father has to train me, look I'm already ten...and this is part of my family's rule, that once we reach ten we are bound to be trained in the valley land" I confessed

Moth looked at me intently and then he finally sighed

"Can I go with you? Is it far?" he asked

"Sadly you can't Moth, you're only five" I said
