Maddy's POV

"But-"

"No."

"But-"

"I said no."

"But-"

"Do I need to spell it out ? N. O."

I let out a exaggerated grunt and stomped my foot childishly before marching to the exit of the carnival.

Muffled complaints burst from the crowd as Trent pushed his way towards me. Waiting for him to catch up, I leaned against the pillar which glowed brightly in the night sky, among with all the other lights.

A little girl in a pink sweater sitting by a bench caught my sight. She was cuddling herself , face soaked with tears. They kept running down her puffy cheeks.

"Mads, jeez, slow down."

"I'm standing still, you idiot."

He glared at me playfully and I returned the glare by sticking my tongue out.

"Sometimes I forget you're almost eighteen, not eight."

"Why, thank you! It's always music to my ears to hear people praise me of my youthful appearance."

He shook his head and brushed his yellow, polo shirt. His blue jeans had a brown stain on his left knee because I 'accidentally' spilled my drink on him.

"You get the car. I'm going to walk around one last time."

"Promise no more games?"

"I still don't see why I can't play anymore!"

"It's late, Mads. You still need to rest."

"But it's been a whole month-"

"Orders from the doctor."

I blew a lock of hair away from my face and stuck my tongue again. A habit of mine.

After watching his back disappear into the car park, I walked slowly to the little girl.

"May I sit here?"

I asked gently and the girl nodded eventually. I sat close to her and she didn't seem to mind so I stroked her hair a little.

"Why are you sad?"

"My sister- she- she told me to stay and wait for her here. Then-then, she didn't come-"

The rest of her words were choked by her tears but I understood.

"Shhh... it's okay. Do you have any contacts?"

"No. My parents are traveling. My sister isn't picking up her phone."

She sniffles again and my heart fell for her. Suddenly, she threw herself on my lap and cried on my white blouse. I cradled her and rock her gently side to side until I heard the last sniffle.

"You-you've got something on your shirt. Sorry."

I looked down at my damp blouse and smiled sweetly at the girl. She kept her head down and played with her fingers.

"Hey, I know what would make you feel better. Want some ice cream?"

Her head perked up at the sound of that as I wiped her tears away. Eyes glistening with joy, she smiled and two deep dimples appeared on her chubby cheeks.

"Mads! I've been looking all over for you! Why are you- well, hello there."

Trent ran up towards up and picked the girl from my lap. I shot him a quick gesture between her and the ice cream shop.
