Percy's POV

Two hours later...

"I believe you all know the consequences of fighting?"

"This isn't school campus, granny."

My jaws kept grinding together every time the taller of the two boys insulted the kind old lady who had treated our injuries.

"Exactly, sweetie. Which is why, here you actually have to pay for what you done."

I blocked out the rest of the lecture. My thoughts flashing back to when the stinging pain shot up to my eyes and her skin ice cold hit my cheek.

What have I done?

I was leaning by the wall, far away from Des, who was sitting on the table at the opposite side of the kitchen. She wouldn't even look up.

Was I that wrong?

Des's POV

Regret.

Guilt.

Whatever you want to call it.

It was killing me from the inside.

I overreacted, I didn't intend to hit Percy, I just wanted him to stop.

Patricia had came marching out of the back room and then dragged us into the kitchen. Percy hadn't even looked at me since I slapped him.

I stared down at my sneakers while Patricia continued explaining to us about our irresponsibility. Anthony kept spitting out insult but I didn't even have the heart to stop him anymore.

Seems like every time I tried to help, I hurt people instead.

Gosh, that was a cliche Hollywood line.

My mind dazed off into another land. My eyes clouded with tears.

My heart stopped. My breathing shallow. He was staring at me, I could feel his blue eyes burning holes at the back of my neck.

He probably hated me. Who wouldn't? I avoided him for a month after yelling at him inconsiderately and slapped him when he stood up for me.

I had a sick urge in my throat at the thought of Percy hating me.

"-and therefore, you all, have to work here for the summer to pay for all the damage you have done."

Vincent, although barely conscious, complained endlessly and the girl cussed loudly while Anthony dragged them out the kitchen.

Patricia looked between me and Percy over and over again, before letting out a sigh and walking out.

Oh great.

Only now do people leave us alone.

I saw at the corner of my tears eye Percy opening his mouth and closing it again.

My feet were dangling form the desk and Percy was suddenly so interested at the frying pan as I was focused on my nails.

"I really didn't-"

"I just-"

We both said at the same time. Way to go, Des! Interrupting the boy who you slapped is a great way to truce!

"You go first."

We both spoke in unison again.

"I just lo-"

"I real-"

I peeked at Percy who was biting his lip and the side of his mouth tugging upwards.

I couldn't help but smile either. His head shot up and caught my meek smile. I quickly turned my gazed to the interesting frying pan.

I heard a tiny chuckle which broke the silence and a little giggle escaped my lips. Soon, the chuckles and giggles got louder and we both were laughing.

"At least we both can agreed that frying pan has good workmanship."

His attempt to lighten the situation, lessened the burden in my stomach.

"Yeah, really smooth metal."

I mentally gave myself a high five. On my head.

"I'm sorry, Des. I just lost it I guess. When people hurt you, I feel like I'm responsible for it."

"Percy,I'm the one who should by saying sorry. I didn't mean to slap you, I just needed to stop hurting yourself. Besides, people picking on me isn't your fault."

"Des, I asked you to be my girlfriend in front of the whole school and now that, we are never actually seen together, people will think what Mads said was true. That I was a cheater.

And Tyler is the only one who knows about its a lie. People think you can be picked on because they think I didn't want you at all."

Butterflies began flying around again when I thought of our first kiss.

It wasn't like in novels or TV shows or whatever. It was like feeling a sense of security for the bond we once shared. It was perfect.

Wait, wait, wait hold up.

He wanted me?

Like, me-me?

"Why so red, Des?"

He mocked me of my tinted cheeks which darkened at his statement.

"Ha. Ha. Ha. Vey funny."

"Indeed hilarious."

I shot him a dirty glare but I was still blushing. I didn't noticed him was already leaning by the counter in front of me.

He gasped.

"What?"

I asked him worriedly at his slightly pale face.

"The project."

"Oh.The project. Oh. Ohhhhhhh."

"You don't get it, do you?"

I shook my head meekly and shrugged sheepishly.

"We are going to have to work here for the whole summer break so we won't have time for the project."

My mouth shaped into an 'o'.

"And?"

I was never really a star student so I didn't care that much.

"The project counts 75% of our finals and if we fail our finals..."

He didn't need to continue that dreadful sentence.

If your lips are moving, if your lips are moving, if your lips are moving, then you lyin, lyin, lyin baby.

Percy took out his phone which was playing a Meghan Trainor ringtone and smiled embarrassedly at me.

"Sup, Mads? You-you what?! Mads, I don't even know if that's legal. You could be- But- Mads! She might be- You have to stop interrupting- Jeez! Alright!Ok, crazy woman."

I watched with curiosity burning within me. I wasn't going to lie, I missed Maddy, she was my only true friend.

"What happened?"

Percy tossed back his head and let out a sigh.

"My sister kidnapped a little girl."
