I heard my phone go off and the notification 'new message from Amelia' flashed across the screen. The devil herself. I was just about to open it when my mom came up behind me to give me a hug.'Mom your grip is too tight, stop.' I said, pulling away, switching the phone off and popping it into my pocket.
My mother never really liked Amelia and she always disapproved of, well, her existence. She wouldn't even shake her hand if it was a life or death situation. My phone buzzes in my pocket and I see a call from Amelia. I considered picking it up- it could be emergent- but put it on silent, deciding against the definitely poor decision.
I saw Katherine bring out a white board and I helped her out with it. She was wearing a white romper with bluish-grey stripes and tassels at the hem paired with white converse shoes. She looked summery.
Her family and mine were both gathered at my house for 'game night' which was really just an excuse to see Katherine and my 'chemistry'. Despite the strong protests from both of us, our parents did what they do best- ignore our complaints and do what they want.
As I set up the snacks and beers, I noticed Katherine's mom gesturing to me, then to her top and smiling as Katherine nudged her to stop. Must be about the whole 'shirtless in her house' scene.
A little more than 40 minutes into the losing battle of Pictionary, with Katherine drawing better blindfolded than I do with my eyes open, I heard the bell go off. Assuming it was the Chinese takeout I had ordered for us, I rushed to the door. Anything would be better than this embarrassing loss.
I opened the door, going for my wallet when I saw Amelia standing at the door. She was dressed in a furry black tube top and a mini skirt that accentuated her curves by a lot. She had a dark maroon-ish shade of lipstick that made her lips seem bigger. Her legs quivered in the pointy heels as she swayed around a little, trying to maintain her balance.
I came out of the house, closing the sore behind me. 'What are you doing at my house?' I asked, my tone scaring me more than her.
'Oh I'm just here to say something.' She pulled herself together and stood as tall as she could, trying her best not to shift her weight. 'I should've said this ages ago but I'm not brave. I'm a coward- a really big one and I'm sorry that it took a marriage for me to talk about this but I have to tell you.' Her words were rushed and strung together as if she had a lot to say, but little time. She moved a few steps closer and I could smell the alcohol on her breath.
