It was a fine Sunday morning, and you'd seen Tobio head home from his morning jog through your window. You had made up your mind to put in effort to make him feel that you were there for him, and now that you were sure he didn't have practice today, it was time to put your plan into action.
You were going to ask him to the park you frequented when you were young, and you were going to make lunch for the both of you. Hopefully, he didn't have any other plans today. You now regretted not remembering to ask for his number, so you made a mental not to do so later.
Standing in the middle of your kitchen, you promised you were going to cook something that would make even your mother proud. Tobio better be ready for your version of his favorite food.
---------------------------------------------------------
Kageyama wss sitting at his desk writing in his volleyball journal when the doorbell rang. He put down his pen and wondered who could be visiting, as all his parents acquaintances knew they were out of town.
He walked down the stairs towards the front door. When he opened it, his eyes widened in surprise.
"(F/N)?" His eyes took in your appearance. He pushed away the thought of how cute you looked in a (f/c) summer dress. "What brings you here?"
"H-hello, Tobio-kun," you started shyly. "I-I was wondering if you would like to have lunch at the park. Only i-if you're not busy, I mean."
He looked at the bag you held up in front of him. He was surprised with your invitation at first, but then he decided it would be good to go out since it was a warm and sunny day. Plus, he really didn't want to see a disappointed look on your face.
"Sounds good," he answered. He opened the door wider for you. "Come in, I need a few minutes to get ready."
When you were sat comfortably in his living room, he went back upstairs to get changed. As he took out his clothes, he recalled the last time you were together. You'd asked about his grandfather and he now felt embarrassed at how emotional he'd gotten then. He wanted to apologize for being the reason you cried that night. He regretted just walking away and leaving you there on the sidewalk, shedding tears for him.
Tobio chanced a sideways glance towards you while you both were walking to the park. You had a smile on your face and you looked so happy. The sun shined on your (h/c) hair, and to him, it seemed as if you glowed. The dress looked really good on you. The part of your shoulders that were left bare by the dress captivated him - your skin looked silky smooth.
He didn't realize that he was already staring, not until you brought him back to reality.
"T-tobio-kun," you were blushing as you said his name. "Is s-something wrong?"
His eyes widened and he immediately looked away. "It's n-nothing! Sorry!"
When you didn't answer, he slowly turned back towards you. Your head was slightly bowed and there was an unsure smile on your face.
"I t-thought that this dress was appropriate for the weather, b-but I wasn't sure how I would look in it. If it doesn't suit me, you can say so. I won't mind."
WHAT! How could she- it was totally the opposite! he thought. His brows knit together in typical Kageyama style. He wanted to tell you that he liked how the dress looked on you. But when he realized what he was thinking, his face started to heat up.
He watched as you kept on walking, thankful that you didn't notice what was going on with him. He sighed. Girls were difficult. You make him keep having these weird feelings when you're together. Then again, other girls never had this effect on him - he couldn't care any less about them. Or maybe it's because it's you, someone who is more important to him than the others. His friend, his (F/N).
His (F/N). He kind of liked the sound of that. A tiny smile appeared on his lips. Today was a fine day. The sun warmed him perfectly. So perfectly that he felt the warmth spread from his chest to every part of him.
---------------------------------------------------------
You handed Tobio the lunch you had prepared. You both sat on a bench under a tree, very near to the place where you played when you were younger.
"This place hasn't changed at all," you commented with a smile.
"Yeah," he agreed as he started to open up the bento.
You suddenly felt very shy as you waited for him to take a bite. You watched as he took the chopsticks in his hand.
A small smile appeared on his face as he had his first try of your food. Your eyes widened and your heart started beating in a funny way.
"It's been a long time since I've tried real home-cooked food," he said as he turned to you, his smile now wider.
Ba dump. You wondered if he could hear the thumping in your chest.
You watched, mesmerized as he continued to eat heartily. A smile made its way onto your lips as well.
"I'm glad you like it, Tobio-kun."
You both then continued to eat in a comfortable silence. As you both finished eating, Tobio handed back the bento to you, a small blush on his cheeks.
"W-would you mind making one for me again, (F/N)?" He asked, his eyes not quite meeting yours.
You were surprised by his request. He wasn't one to ask you for things even when you were younger, and he definitely wasn't the type who would normally make requests like this from anyone.
You can't help but smile widely. There was no way you were going to refuse him. "Of course! I can bring one for you tomorrow!"
He looked at you. You blushed as his hand suddenly came up to rest on top of your head and ruffle your hair.
"Thank you," you heard him whisper before he stood up. "Now, come on, we're going for a walk."
You looked up at him, but he had his back to you. Little did you know that he avoided facing you because he knew he was blushing.
You packed the lunch boxes hurriedly and stood up as well. He turned towards you and took the bag from your hands.
You watched him as he walked ahead, and a wave of nostalgia hit you. An image of a raven-haired boy walking home with a pink floral backpack flashed through your mind. You recalled how he'd suddenly pick up your bag when it was time to head back after playing in the park when you were kids. And he did it every single time.
You felt butterflies in your stomach. Time hadn't changed anything between you two like you had feared. The friendship was still there, and he was still your same old Tobio.
So if time hadn't change anything, what was this fluttering in your chest then? Because it was definitely new. Or was it?
"Are you coming, (F/N)?" His voice broke through your thoughts. You realized he was already quite a way ahead of you.
"Y-yes! Coming!" You replied as you hurried to catch up.
Whatever your thoughts were, one thing was sure. You were happy you got to spend the day with him today. And judging by how the day turned out, maybe Tobio was happy he spent the day with you too.
It was definitely one fine day.
