"Yachi-saaan!" an orange-haired boy enthusiastically called out from the open gym doors. "I heard you got a new student in your class today."
"Mhmm," the girl replied as she stepped into the gym. "I think she came back to Japan from overseas and they don't finish the school year until June there. That's why she joined us in the second term. Her name's (L/N) (F/N). Why do you ask, Hinata-kun?"
"Oh, nothing. It's just exciting to have someone new, that's all." Hinata grinned. "So... is she pretty?"
"Ehhh?!! Hinata-kun, that's what you wanted to ask all along wasn't it?"
Kageyama watched the two from where he was practicing his serves. He couldn't quite make out what they were talking about, but he concluded it wasn't anything important because Hinata was part of the conversation. That airhead didn't have the mental capacity to talk about something worth his time, as far as he was concerned.
Practice was the same, with Kageyama and Hinata reapetedly doing quick sets after the usual drills. Of course, their usual bickering was ever present. Those two could never get through a few hours without arguing.
"Come on, you two," Sugawara sighed. Honestly, the two were a perfect combination when it came to quick attacks, but apart from that, they were like oil and water. "You're wasting precious time when you could be doing a lot more sets."
The duo glared at each other but then went back to practicing. The continuous sound of balls hitting the wooden floor could be heard as everyone finally concentrated on today's practice. Before they all knew it, it was time to go home.
"Alright, everyone! It's time to tidy up," Daichi called with a clap of his hands to catch the team's attention. "Hinata and Kageyama, that's enough for today. Rest is also important."
When everything was put away, the team got ready to go home.
"Ne, Kageyama, did you know there was a new student in Yachi-san's class?" Hinata asked as they were all walking out of the school.
"That makes her my classmate as well," Tsukishima piped up.
"Oh yeah. Tsukki was telling me she came from overseas," Yamaguchi added, "and she's really good in English."
"Don't care," Kageyama mumbled.
"Of course. The king doesn't care about anyone but himself," the bespectacled boy sneered.
"Stop calling me that, four-eyes!"
"Aw, come on, Kageyama," Hinata interjected, "aren't you the least bit interested? She could be pretty, ya know."
"So?" The setter countered with an eyebrow raised.
"You might like her."
"Don't think so."
"Suuuuure? She could become your girlfriend."
The setter scoffed. "As if I need one, dumbass."
It was a clear night, Kageyama noted, as he turned the corner towards his house. The moon was shining brightly and the stars were out.
Pushing his hands into his pockets, he thought about today's practice. He made mental notes on what he was going to write in his volleyball journal when he got home. There were some adjustments he needed to make in his tosses to airhead Hinata and the turd Tsukishima. He felt that four-eyed jerk could do so much more if he tried. Also, his serves still weren't as good as Oikawa's.
As he walked along, Kageyama was distracted from his thoughts by a familiar sound. He'd heard this melody countless times many years ago. It now sounded a lot more refined even to his untrained ears, but it was definitely the same one. The soft, lilting notes surrounded him, floating from a direction he knew too well.
With his heart hammering in his chest, he turned towards the house on his left. He stopped in his tracks when his eyes landed on the illuminated open window. The fact that the normally dark and uninhabited house was lit up and piano music could be heard from it meant only one thing.
You were back, and that thought put a smile on the normally nonchalant face of Kageyama Tobio.
