"How was practice today?" You asked Tobio as you put the pork buns you'd just heated up in front of him. You took the seat opposite him at your dining table.
"It was fine," he replied. "Nothing interesting. How did your date go?"
"E-eh?" You blushed. "D-date?"
He looked at you for a moment. "You know, with Hiro-senpai?"
"I-it wasn't a date! It was a thank you for agreeing to help him practice for the competition."
"Oh." His posture seemed to relax after hearing that. He wasn't even aware he was so tense in the first place. "So did you have fun?"
"Yes, I did. Hiro-senpai was so nice! And he's really so passionate about playing the violin that it inspires me to do my best with my piano as well."
He sat quietly listening to you talk about your day as he ate. Hearing your voice relaxed him, although he couldn't quite shake away the sinking feeling he got everytime you mentioned Hiro. Why? Was he perhaps feeling this way because you were the only one he truly considered a friend and the thought of sharing you with someone else made him uncomfortable? Maybe. Yet he didn't mind you spending time with Hinata. Or Yachi. Or Yamaguchi. Or anyone else for that matter. Anyone except Hiro.
Tobio frowned and his brows drew together unconsciously. You noticed his demeanor change and suddenly stopped talking.
"Tobio-kun? What's wrong?"
Hearing you call his name pulled him out of his thoughts. A blush started to form on his cheeks as he realized he'd been so spaced out that it made you worry.
"N-nothing. Gomen. I-," he couldn't seem to find anything to say.
You got up from your chair and went to his side. You felt him stiffen when your hand touched his forehead.
"You look a little flushed. You might be getting a fever," you stated as you put a hand on your forehead as well.
"I'm okay, really. You don't have to worry-," his sudden motion of standing up caused you to move backward quickly, making him think you would lose your balance. His arms instinctively wrapped around your waist to keep you from falling.
Your hands went up to hold on to his shoulders. Your eyes widened as he tightened his hold, pressing your body to his. Your face started to heat up as his own dark blue eyes widened in surprise.
You could feel your heart hammering in your chest. Or was it his? You couldn't tell anymore.
"Tobio-kun-"
"(F/N)-"
The two of you stood there, waiting for the other to continue talking. You waited.
And waited.
"(F/N)," Tobio started, voice barely above a whisper. "Will you come to the gym tomorrow after your club?"
"Oh, but.." you suddenly couldn't look into his eyes and instead focused your gaze on the top button of his uniform. "I promised Hiro-senpai I'd help him practice."
Silence.
You felt his hold around your waist loosen until his arms fell to his sides. You felt, rather than saw, him lower his head.
"I see." He moved to pick up his bag from the floor. "It's getting late, I should go. Thank you for the meal."
You watched him turn and head towards the door. You couldn't explain it, but you felt a heaviness in your heart. You felt cold as you were watching him leave.
