[Ginny's POV]
It's around 11 pm when I leave Manon's in a huff. Now it's truly over. I couldn't stop myself hollering every harsh comment I could come up with. Their startled and upset look's still transfixed in my head. I wanted to give them a real piece of my mind, even I was surprised at how nasty I could be. Was I too rude? Too direct? Too insensitive? Who knows. I certainly don't, and it's time to stop caring so much. Nice, gentle Ginny's been crushed to pieces tonight, and she's not coming back. Marching home, I clear my head of all worries, preparing for a new, inconsiderate, cold-hearted version of myself.
I'm thinking all this, fixated on my own thoughts, when I suddenly get the horrible sensation that I'm being watched. Peering around, I notice alarmingly large shadows approaching. After swallowing hard, I bolt to the nearest shop and shut the door with an echoing bang. The cashier doesn't seem bothered with my loud entrance and merely gives me a nod. Walking around and straightening up, I pretend to be interested in the first soda I can spot on the shelf. I pick out some random snacks, then walk over and place them on the counter. Humming to himself, the cashier scans them, with a total of around three bucks. About to take out my wallet, I get the same unpleasant feeling as before and look up. The worker gives me a lopsided grin, and I feel as if he's looking straight through me. My stomach turns over when he licks his lips, his eyes narrowing. Throwing down the money I'm holding, I snatch the chips and soda from the counter and dash to the exit without another glance back.
OK, two alarming sights in the space of ten minutes. Try and calm down, don't be too paranoid, I tell myself, taking deep breaths and a few chugs of the Fanta I've just bought. Following a quick sugar energy boost, I call a cab to head home. To ensure my new thoughtless, cold persona, I block all the girls' numbers, permanently shutting them out of my life. Too determined to start over, I don't consider it again and push the regret out my mind, convincing myself it's for the best. The cab arrives and I climb in, muttering a quick hello to the driver. It's a woman, sporting a fierce, scarlet hairdo, piercing black eyes and an almost ghostly pale complexion. I busy myself with my phone and count all the passing cars until we reach my place. Halfway, I notice out the corner of my eye the woman peering at me with a chilling stare. My stomach gives a frightening lurch and I try to ignore her. She continues leering at me in an unnerving fashion. Her eyes not one bit on the road, she still manages to steer flawlessly straight without trouble.
"Stop!" I say abruptly.
She hits the brakes so aggressively that I smack into the seat in front.
"I, uh.. have to get out here," I lie, slightly dizzy as I hand her a few dollars for the eerie ride.
My stomach in knots, her eyes still glued to me, I stumble out the car and wait for her to leave so I can walk home. She stays parked for an alarmingly long moment, gives me one last severe look, then drives off. I exhale. Heart pounding against my chest, blood still chilled, I proceed home, continuing to feel eyes on me and tripping over my own feet. Reaching my front door feels like a blessing as it has never done so before. I stagger inside and bolt the door shut, feeling the need for six more locks. Petrified, I sink into bed and lay awake for what seems like an eternity before I finally fall into a deep sleep.
To be continued...
