The Capacious Cloud

This tale begins far far away--up in the land of the Winged Ones. The mighty dragons, sweet phoenixes, and proud griffins shared a home up in the sky. They lived their lives not knowing the grave dangers in the other worlds or even that they existed. Until one day, everything changed...

~What the territory of the Winged ones looked like on a normal day~

Chance had just finished his morning patrol duty around the borders of the Capacious Cloud. There were a lot of dangers out there, so everyone on the cloud took turns patrolling. He sat down under the colossal maple tree--the Tree of Life. His miniature wings were sore, and he desperately needed rest. Before he knew it, he was fast asleep.

Chance had been hoping for a  peaceful slumber, but as it turned out, he was quite mistaken. What made it really awful, was that dreams in any fantasy world aren't usually just dreams. They are real. Maybe a little messed up, but real.

The sun shone through the trees to reveal a marsh. Small creatures were flying about. I made a swipe for one. It was a fairy, small and delicate. It had golden blonde hair and bright blue eyes. She wore a plain white dress embroidered with gold. I let it go. It didn't seem to notice that I grabbed it at all.

"Periwinkle, you don't pick those flowers. I sense something wrong with them," a fairy, presumably her mother, with auburn hair lectured.

"Well, I don't sense anything! My powers are stronger than yours!" Periwinkle, the blonde fairy, lied.

She did sense something was wrong, something very wrong.

Periwinkle picked the flower anyway. A massive earthquake shook the ground. A black chariot shot out of the ground.

"No! Why am I so stupid. This is exactly what happened to Persephone! But Hades isn't real? Why would he want me? What is happening?" Periwinkle gagged for air, her mind full of questions, as her capture dragged her into the earth.

Periwinkle shut her eyes. Someone shook her. Thinking maybe this was all a dream, she opened them.

A tall man with greasy skin wearing a bronze helmet. Hades. He offered Periwinkle a fruit--pomegranate. A big juicy one from Persephone's garden.

Luckily, Periwinkle was brighter than Persephone. She denied. Hades was glistening with anger. He took out a white cloth and placed it over Periwinkle's mouth. She passed out.

Chance burst awake--his heart was hammering like the blacksmith of the town was right next to him.

Since he couldn't stand the thought of a fairy dying, he decided he had to go and find this fairy. She had to be real, right? The only thing is, Chance didn't know where this world was. It must be somewhere. It could take hours to reach or years. He tried not to think about the possibility that he could die before even reaching this place. That would be horrific.

So, Chance went to visit the Phoenix of Destiny to consult his future. Whenever anyone had any problems, they would go to her--the phoenix. She has all the answers you need to know, but the catch was she could only speak them in prophecies.

"Hello Chance. How may I help you?" the Phoenix of Destiny asked.

"I want to know whether I should go to the land of the fairies or not--to find Periwinkle. Also, maybe a little bit of stuff about if I'll live would be helpful."

"Sure thing!"

"Thanks!"

"You shall venture to the Great Unknown,

the evil, the lost, the betrayed all found.

You will find yourself all alone,

with no one to tell, no one around."

"Wait, what?" Chance was really confused now.

"You do know that I only speak in prophecies, and I am just as clueless as you are, right? But you know what? I'll help you figure it out, even I don't know what it means," the phoenix answered politely.

"The Great Unknown...that should be a place right?" Chance deciphered.

"Not necessarily. Could be a person/creature. Or a thing. It all depends..." the phoenix answered.

"What help is that going to be, if we don't even know what type of thing it is?"

"Um... I guess that's how prophecies work. To be more concise that is how they work. They're not always the most understandable, and often have double meanings, but their all we've got right? Knowing too much is bad for you, so it could be a good thing prophecies don't reveal so much information. Let's continue. Evil, lost, and betrayed. You're looking for three things or people/creatures. Lost could mean this "Periwinkle" fairy. Evil doesn't sound very good. Betrayed could go either way. "

"Finding myself all alone doesn't sound very promising. Alas, nothing about this seems cheerful."

"Just wanted to give you a warning--I've had enough experience to do so. Some of the lines--like no one around-- they could be a lot better than you've imagined, or they could be much much worse than you've imagined. Just remember that."
