I hang up the phone call with my mother after making sure that she put the kids to bed.
I sighed as I sat back into the waiting room chair not knowing what to do.
When I saw Mikey lying in the hallway, looking...lifeless, I realized a lot of things.
I still love him. And even though I left him, he'll always be the love of my life and the most amazing father to my kids.
I had been waiting out here for around 2 hours now thinking of crazy scenarios on what could've happened to Mikey.
But I realized that doing that would just get me worked up even more.
I constantly asked any doctors passing by if they knew what room he was in or if he was okay but they didn't.
I gave up and just waited for a doctor to contact me first.
I was the only one here because Mikey's family lives out of state, and I needed my parents to watch the kids.
"Family of Mikey Williams,"
The doctor walked over to me, seeing as I was the only person in the waiting room.
I rubbed my hands across my thighs as I took a deep breath and stood up.
I faced the doctor prepared for whatever he was going to say.
"Hi, I'm Doctor Washington,"
"Is he okay?"
The doctor took another glance at his chart before responding.
"He's going to be fine but he suffered from a small seizure."
"A seizure?" I mumbled but the doctor still heard me.
"What causes it?" I asked.
"Well usually seizures are caused by an interruption from normal connections between nerve cells in the brain."
I nodded taking in everything that he was saying.
"Well in Mikey's case, his seizure was caused by drug withdrawal."
My eyes widened when he mentioned drugs.
"W-What kind of drugs?"
"Well we drug tested him and didn't find any in his system. We believe that the seizure was caused by drug withdrawal, meaning that his body was not used to functioning without them. But we ran other tests and by looking at his chart, I am positive that he was starting to become clean."
"So he was on drugs?"
"We're not exactly sure what kind but I'm sorry to tell you that he was. We're not sure if it was something that he chose to use, or if it was prescribed to him for a sport-related injury or medical issue of some sort."
I shook my head realizing that none of this made sense.
"How do you know he was on drugs if you didn't find any in his system,"
"He told me himself,"
I looked down fumbling with my fingers not knowing what to think.
"Would you like to see him?"
I slowly nod and follow the doctor as he leads me down a hall.
Once the doctor opens the door, I take a deep breath and finally take everything in.
He steps aside to let me enter the room as he shuts the door leaving Mikey and me alone.
I slowly walk into the room and see him rubbing his hand across his face.
"Hi," he realizes that I'm in the room.
I take a seat in the chair next to his bed.
"Are you gonna talk to me?" He questions me as he grabs my hand.
I gently pull my hand and look around the room as my eyes start to well up with tears again.
"You scared me. When I saw you laying there...not moving and...you scared me," I said as a tear slipped from my eye.
"I'm sorry,"
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"It's not what you think,"
"Did you buy the drugs or did a doctor give them to you? There's not much to think about,"
He slowly sat up as he said "Jaliyah I'm sorry,"
"Just tell me,"
"So about three months ago during practice, I went up to try and block the ball, but the other dude pushed my leg without realizing it, and I flew into some chairs in the stands. I hit my head and it was killing me, so I went to the doctor and they told me I had a concussion. So they prescribed me some light pills cause I was dizzy all the time, and the headaches were unbearable,"
"But you had a seizure from withdrawals. How long were you taking the medicine,"
"Well at first I didn't take the pills cause they were too big,"
I nodded understanding him. When we were together Mikey told me how his whole life he always had trouble swallowing pills.
"So how'd you get addicted to them,"
"Well Brittany," he says bringing up his other baby's mother. "She would crush them up and put them in my food and in my drinks. After a while my prescription eventually ran out, and my concussion was gone. But I still wanted to take the medicine,"
"Mikey you made her buy drugs for you?"
He nodded as he looked down.
"Mikey you were on drugs around our kids,"
"I thought that she was getting the same pills that I had for my concussion. But I didn't find out it was opioids until I couldn't stop taking them,"
"So she was giving you drugs,"
"Yeah that's one of the reasons that I broke it off with her. And I'm working on getting custody of the baby cause I found out that Brittany was using opioids and way more,"
I shook my head in disbelief as I thought of all the wrong ways that this could've gone.
But thank god that Mikey was okay.
"Why didn't you come to me?" I asked.
He mumbled something but I couldn't hear him.
"Hmm?" I asked him.
"I was scared," he wiped a tear. "I didn't want you to take the kids from me. I didn't wanna lose you or them,"
"I'd never do that to you," I stood up and hugged them.
"Please don't leave me," he whispered as he cried into my shirt.
"I won't leave you Mikey...I won't leave..." I rubbed his back as he cried into my chest.
