a/n: i've been binging Avatar the Last Airbender and I think it's a pretty good AU. I'm also so grateful for all the positive thoughts on my work! There is no dialogue, this is a past tense retelling like in avatar, and you're reading it like the narrator. ATLA tells many stories like this and I've been wanting to write a story like this for a while. This story isn't meant to be long, but instead genuine.

Giyu was an outcast from the rest of his fellow waterbenders. He was weak and unable to handle the upmost simple of things like controlling the tide or more there lack of courage to. While his best friend Sabito was a prodigy at it. Sabito was well liked by the masters and was expected to become the next chief of their tribe. Well into their teenage years the fire nation started the 100 year war and instead of fighting in it, Giyu stayed behind with at the Northern Water Tribe. Only a few months after leaving to aid the Earth Kingdom did Giyu learn of his best friend's sad fate. Trying to protect all the other tribesmen, he was killed by a firebender. After the loss of his best friend, Giyu decided to train harder constantly criticizing himself for being so weak and staying behind. If he'd gone than maybe it would've been Sabito alive and him dead or maybe they both would survive. Giyu talked to Waterbending Master Urokodaki asking for what he should do next after his training. Urokodaki ushered him to help the war with the other men and so he did.  He traveled to the Earth Kingdom in hopes of benefitting the men. He was shocked at the impact the fire nation had on them. He was strong, very strong, but at the same time everyone thought he was weak to people. One day while traveling through Omashu City, trying to buy some knives and supplies he met a young girl, she looked very young, but surprising the 2 only had a 3 year age difference, her name was Shinobu Kocho. She helped run a medical herb shop and clinic with her 2 sisters. He noticed how very beautiful she was right off the bat. How she always tended to others and smiled. At first they never interacted, he just said the herbs he needed, paid, and left without a second word, but soon that changed. Shinobu started talking to him while he was there, although he never replied she still chatted. After some time he would reply, one sentences or one word, but a reply was a reply. One day he formed his own thought and asked Shinobu if she was an earthbender. She just laughed in his face and said no. She explained that if she was a bender she'd be more useful during this time of war, but wasn't. Giyu took issue with that and said she was useful and that without her many of his men would still be injured or sick or buried 6ft underground. She told him that she supposed some things she did was useful, but if it wasn't her, there would be someone else. Even after leaving Giyu always thought what the girl was wrong. It bothered him so much that she thought so lowly of herself and her skills weren't very useful. He admired how kind she was and her grace, most of his thoughts became clouded by the young girl. He was confused why he was acting so strangely and went back to their clinic. This time it wasn't Shinobu, but her older sister Kanae running it. Giyu desperate to know what was wrong confided in Kanae with his questions. When Kanae realized what was wrong with him, she just giggled and him that he'd find out eventually. This had only cause Giyu to be even more confused with his issue. As he continued visiting Shinobu the tightness of his chest kept getting stronger and stronger, his face got warmer and warmer. Shinobu was the most beautiful person he'd ever seen in his life, there was nothing that could counter that in his mind. One day he visited her when a group of 5 men rammed in and threatened for money. Giyu didn't know what to do, until Shinobu quickly started throwing blades at the men. The men started to get pinned to the wall one by one. Giyu was shocked at the skill that she had with aim. He was so impressed that after they were gone he had asked her where she'd learn such skills from. She told him that knife and blade throwing had become a hobby of hers after she saw archers practice shooting. She then went on to talk about how she didn't have the strength for a bow and arrow, but instead used knives and blades as they were lighter. This would be another interesting thing he'd learn about her. Once he'd return back to the dock the tight feeling still lingered in his body, he asked his good friend from the Water Tribe, Tanjiro if he had any health issues and explained his symptoms. Tanjiro just laughed and asked if the lonely Giyu had finally fallen in love. Giyu was confused, as love wasn't particularly a word in his vocabulary. Tanjiro asked how Giyu would feel if he found out Shinobu had a romantic partner. Giyu's eyes widen and he said not very good, and that he would want to scream. Tanjiro just smiled and said that he was in love. Love. Something that he never knew, but found. Now with the knowledge of what his issue was, he started in confide in Kanae and sometimes even Kanao. Kanae would often laugh in his face and say that he was being stupid and should tell Shinobu, Kanao was always flustered and didn't really know what to tell him. This lasted for months when one day he was talking to Kanae and she got mad. She stood up and marched into the back of the clinic while yelling that she's done. Giyu was worried he'd gotten her mad, when she came back out with a confused Shinobu. She stood Shinbu in front of Giyu and pushed her onto him. Giyu caught her and both were red in the face not knowing what to do. Kanae yelled that if they weren't gonna say something she would for them. Hearing this Shinobu muttered into his chest that she loved him. Giyu couldn't hear what she said and she asked him to being his face closer and so he did. Shinobu whispered she loved him. Giyu couldn't believe it, the girl he loved, loved him back. He smiled longingly and placed a kiss on her forehead sealing her confession. This was the beginning on a very blessed and happy life for the two of them.

a/n: I'm off my break! This isn't that good and I know. It was just something quick to write. Some of you guys may be confused on why Shinobu is a non-bender, but  she suits a powerful non-bender like Mai especially with their personality and their precision in aim being similar. This is no good and poor quality. Sending love from me to you!
