September 26, 1943
I woke up to the feeling of someone tugging on my arm. I let out a soft moan as I opened my eyes to see Lukas staring back at me. His face was expressionless but I could tell in those brown eyes he wanted to tell me something.
“I know Lukas, we need to get up for work today.” I said as I sat up.
Lukas shook his head and wrote something down on a piece of paper then gave it to me.
The medical exam is today and I’m afraid I might fail. he wrote.
I read the paper again before looking back up to him with a small smile. “Lukas I don’t think that German officer would be angry if you can’t talk. As long as we can work, I don’t think they even care.” I said.
Lukas wrote something else and handed the paper back to me.
Are you going to be with me? I heard there can be two people at a time in the room. I don’t want to be alone and I’m more comfortable with you Mika. he wrote.
I breathed out carefully as I got up from my bed and put on my shoes. “Let’s go Lukas, we can’t keep them waiting.” I said as I walked out into the cold once more.
The Germans had us all lined up just outside the medical building. The men were on one side and the women on the other. Lukas nudged my arm and pointed over to a girl with a rag covering her head. She was young, possibly my age and quite beautiful. She was slender, almost like a model and had the most intense brown eyes I’ve ever seen in a girl.
“Is that your sister?” I whispered.
Lukas nodded to me; he never took his eyes off of her. Just then a German officer walked down the line with two men on each side. They both looked new, at least to me. One of the men was giving off glares and dirty looks as he passed by but the other one was much calmer. He looked at us with pity. That must have been the new Medical officer.
“I want everyone to be in a single file, two people at a time inside the medical building.” A German officer informed. I let out a heavy sigh as I knew we would be on line for quite a while.

After standing outside for two hours in the cold, it was finally Lukas and my turn. A German officer shoved us through a door and into a rather large examination room. Standing there next to a large table was the new medical officer. He was looking at us with pity, but also I noted a hint of amusement.
“Strip!” the German officer ordered. Lukas and I took no time in taking off our clothes and standing bare skinned in front of the officer.
“Leave us.” the Medical officer ordered. The other officer nodded and left, thus leaving us alone with this man. He then turned to us and I got a good view of his face. He was beautiful.
Chocolate brown hair, bright blue eyes and a creamy toned skin. This man was like a piece of art come to life. Even though he wore a uniform, I could tell he was well built underneath all those clothes. I felt so ashamed just to look at him, so I looked away.
“Show me your arms.” He requested. His accent was very light, German no doubt but also with a hint of something else, perhaps British. Lukas and I did as told and extended our arms with our numbers. The medical officer grabbed my arm softly; his hands were big and warm. I felt a chill run down my spine to a sudden dirty thought. “What are your names?” he asked.
“Mika Struvolski and he’s Lukas Derolvi.” I answered. The officer looked between the both of us before looking back to me.
“I’m sure Lukas has a voice of his own Mika.” He said sternly.
“I-I know but he’s a mute.” I replied quietly as my eyes stuck to the concrete floor beneath me. I felt his eyes on me, probably contemplating whether he should slap me or not.
“My name is Officer Torren Krysis.” He stated as he walked away from us and to a table. I looked up as he mentioned his name. Torren was a strong name for a German but Krysis didn’t sound German. “Both of you stand over by that wall.” He ordered.
I nudged Lukas’s arm as we went over to where he requested. Torren came back to us and examined our eyes and ears, the usual stuff a doctor would do. I was freezing the entire time and every time Torren would touch me, I felt electricity run through my body. Once Torren was finally finished, he had us put on our clothes again.
“Torren!” I heard someone shout. Lukas and I turned our heads to see the German soldier who gave us dirty looks. He waltzes on in and didn’t even notice us. “First command wants a report after your done with these rats.” He said, his tone made him sound so full of himself.
I looked over to Torren and saw that he was glaring at his fellow German officer. “I’ll get to it Valtren” he said stiffly. The officer known as Valtren smiled a bit and walked out, not once did he give Lukas and me a glance. Torren then looked over to us with an apologetic smile. “I apologize for his rude behavior. You both can go now.” He said softly.
Lukas tugged on my sleeve, letting me know he wanted to get out. I thought a question I’ve wanted to ask. “How come you’re so nice to us? Why are you different than the rest?” I asked. I felt Lukas tense up next to me. Torren gave me a good stare before smiling softly again.
“I was raised to treat others like you wanted to be treated. That’s why I’m so nice to you.” he said.
“But-“
“Your dismissed, Mika Struvolski.” He cut in dismissively
