Dear Nicolai,

Druka and Mama are scared of Papa. Papa has been acting rather strange lately and it’s affecting our hiding. Papa brought strange men into the house, he said they are friends and are willing to help us through this war. I don’t trust those men but Papa said they were good. Papa has been saying many things lately, none of which make sense.

How are you Nicolai? Are you nicely settled into America? Is it everything we read about in the books? Are the woman and men as beautiful as they say? I haven’t gotten a letter from you, buts that’s understandable seeing as the Germans are everywhere.

Please keep your promise.

-Your Brother-
Mika

I sighed deeply as I folded the paper and placed it inside the envelope. I closed my eyes as I could hear Mama and Papa arguing quietly in the other room. Mama and Druka want to leave this apartment. It’s not safe anymore. We are the only family that lives in this street. Everyone else either ran, or had gotten caught. I still didn’t understand why the Germans wanted us dead. What did we do?
