Dear Nicolai,
Papa is dead.
It’s been two months since his death by the hands of the Nazis. Lukas and I are the only two who inhabit the cabin. It’s been very lonely since papa died. Lukas can’t sleep without having a nightmare about Valtren. I too had my nightmares of him, but then I remembered what Torren had said to me, about not showing Valtren any fear. I realized Valtren feeds off of our fear; it motivates him to do what he does.
I’ve hardly been seeing Torren anymore and I fear he might have lost hope even though he did say he had some plan of getting us out. The times when I do get to see him, Valtren is always hanging around him, encouraging him to drink or to sleep with women when off duty. Just the other day I overheard Valtren say to Torren to head on to the women’s cabins by the sniper tower. Apparently he said the women there are willingly giving themselves to the soldiers for food.
Torren rejected that offer thankfully.
Ivanka told me Mama’s health is poor. She told me Mama can hardly stand up for two minutes with feeling tired and more soldiers are beginning to take notice. Ivanka also told me that Valtren has been trying to flirt or make passes at Druka by touching her breasts or her bottom. It makes me angry that Valtren is doing this to everyone. He already killed Papa, and now he’s harassing Druka.
Nicolai you always had the answers to all my problems. I feel like a burden every time I ask you for help but you always helped me out in the end. This time though, I don’t think you’ll be able to help me for that I must try to help myself. Then again if I couldn’t save papa, how the hell am I going to save myself?
-Your Brother-
Mika
