November 30, 1944

Torren and I have been secretly together for a month. I no longer live in that cabin anymore; in fact everyone thinks I’m dead – even Ivanka.

I knew it was selfish of me, but Torren said it was the best way to keep me safe and in doing so he had to lie and say that he killed me.

I live in the hidden room in the furnace. The only thing Torren was able to get from the cabin was the notebook filled with letters to my brother.

That notebook was the only I had keeping me tied to this world but I knew all things must come to an end and this notebook; I needed it to be gone.

“Torren, I want you to do something for me” I said as I lifted the notebook in my hand. Torren never questioned why I wrote in the notebook.

“What is it Mika?” he asked as he walked back into the room. He was wearing a white apron that had blood all over it. He was doing his usual autopsy and he didn’t want his uniform to get dirty.

“I need you to do me a favor.” I said as I held the notebook up. “I need you to mail this to my brother.” I said as I laid it down in front of me.

Torren stood quiet; his eyes stared between the notebook and me. “Mika I’ll gladly send that notebook but I don’t know your brother nor his whereabouts. And lately mail coming from Germany is intercepted by German forces or the Americans. Are you sure you want me to send this?” he asked as he walked up to the bed and picked it up.

“Yeah, I made up my mind. I want my brother to know everything. I don’t know if I’ll live or die but I want my brother to know that I was happy in the end. Please Torren, please send this to him.” I said. I felt my tears swell up.

Torren sighed as he took off the bloody apron and set the notebook aside. “Alright Mika, If that’s what you want then I’ll send it tonight. But I promise you nothing will happen to you.” he said as he walked over and sat down next to me on the bed.

“I know Torren, but I have this feeling that I might not see my brother anymore. He lives in America and I always dreamed of going there but with this war, my brother was lucky enough to go.” I said as I interlaced my hand with his.

“And you will go.” He replied. I looked up him with some confusion but he simply smiled and pecked my cheek. “You will go to America and you’ll live out a happy life.” He added with a sad tone. “I think I’ll be the one to die, it’s been a hunch ever since I came to this camp. After all I’m not really the bad guy here.” He said.

My eyes widened to his words. Did he really think he was going to die here? It was impossible! “No Torren, you and I will go to America together! You and I will live together like a couple, though I’m pretty sure we would have to keep our relationship a secret.” I said.

Torren smiled and sighed deeply. “I do wish that a lot Mika.” He said as he reached into his pocket and took out his small necklace with the wooden cross. “Here, I want you to have this. In case something happens to me-“

“No, nothing will happen to you!” I gasped.

“Mika let me finish.” He said sternly. I looked down to my hands and nodded. “In case something happens to me, I want you to have this for protection. And whenever you’re feeling down or like you can’t make it through, I want you to look at this and think of me.” He said as he tired the necklace twice around my small wrist.

I stared down at it, taking in the wooden features and the small cross that hung loosely. “I feel like I should give you something so that you can always think of me when you feel sad or alone.” I said as I looked up at him.

“I don’t anything from you; just the thought of you and makes my day seem so worth it.” He whispered as he leaned in closer to me and rested his forehead against mine. “I love you soo much Mika, you’re the only person that makes me feel so alive in this hell.” He said to me.

“I love you too Torren.” I said as I nuzzled my face into his neck. “When we go to America, I want to study medicine just like you. We can both be doctors and we can save people’s lives” I said as closed my eyes.

Torren chuckled to the thought and nodded. “Well, that sounds like a plan then.” He said as he wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me closer to him. “Let’s just get out of this hell first, then we’ll talk about your future-“

“Our future” I corrected him.

“Right, our future.” He said softly. “Get some sleep Mika, I’ll mail your notebook tonight.” He assured as he kissed me on the forehead and got up.

I watched as he put back on the bloody apron and picked up my notebook. I smiled at him and tucked myself into the bed. “I love you Torren” I whispered.

Torren turned around and smiled that godly smile of his. “I love you too, Mika.” He replied as he opened the door and walked back into the hell he called a furnace.
