October 29, 1944
Things have been getting worse and worse for us.
More soldiers and being recruited to the camp and more Jews die each day. I’m doing all I can to hold on to whatever hope I have left in me, but I’m finding hard to even breathe anymore.
I’m worried about Lukas, he’s showing signs of major depression. He stopped talking again and he won’t even talk to me, let alone write on a piece of paper. I’m doing all I can to help him through but it’s like he blocked his mind from the world.
“I heard rumors that the Americans and the British had invaded Germany.” Ivanka commented as we were working out in the fields. It was very few people out here.
“When?” I asked.
“They’ve been on enemy territory for months, I just found out today when I overheard some soldiers talking.” She replied as she dug up a good pile of dirt. “That’s why these soldiers are being so hostile, they think the Americans will come and find this camp.” She added.
I felt slightly excited but mainly I knew by the time the Americans come, we all would be dead.
“You! Little girl, we need and extra woman in the factory!” I female German guard announced as she approached Ivanka.
“Make sure Lukas is alright” she whispered as she dropped her shovel and followed the German guard. I looked over to Lukas and saw him digging, his face was grave.
I moved myself over to him; he was standing across from me, still shoveling. “Lukas..” I whispered.
I knew he heard me but he kept on shoveling, the look on his face stood the same.
“Dig faster rats!” a German soldier yelled as he came by Lukas. I watched his expression change from blank to angry in seconds.
“Lukas don’t!” I shouted but it was too late. Lukas picked up his shovel and dug it into the throat of that German officer.
Everyone stopped what they were doing and watched as Lukas beat the Guard with his shovel.
“Stop him!” someone shouted.
“Lukas stop!” I yelled as I dropped my shovel and ran over to him. I had to pull him away from the guard who was bleeding to death on the ground.
I then felt someone grab me by my shoulder and toss me aside like I was trash. I looked up to Valtren with his gun cocked and pointed to Luka’s face. I got up quickly but someone wrapped their arms around me tightly, holding me in place.
Lukas looked over to me and slightly smiled. “I’ll see you soon.” He said before the gun went off and Lukas fell hard to the ground.
I felt his blood splatter all over my face.
I saw his body lay there on the ground, his eyes were blank. I heard someone scream but when I looked around, everyone was silent.
I was the one who screamed.
“LUKAS!!! LUKAS!” my throat stung each time I called out to him. The person holding me began to drag me away. If I were to die now I would be the happiest person ever.
“Mika, please stop!” the person holding me said as they continued to drag me away.
“LET ME GO! PLEASE I NEED TO BE WITH HIM!” I begged as I clawed on the person’s hand.
“Mika it’s me Torrnen! Stop putting up this show!” he hissed as he dragged me around the corner and towards the medical building.
I clawed harder on his hand but he still didn’t let me go. I looked at Valtren and saw him standing over Luka’s body.
The last thing I heard before the doors closed on me was Valtren’s sick and twisted laugh.
