Dejonté's POV
Me, DeMarcus, and Katie went out to eat some fast food after school. I wanted it to just be me and DeMarcus but he insisted on her coming with us. I wanted to tell him about what happened yesterday with me and Ryan but with Katie being here with us I guess I have to tell him another time. I'm also lucky that my parents didn't catch me sneaking in last night after Ryan dropped me off home. Just thinking about how they would've reacted is unsettling.
Right now I just finished paying for my food and placed it on the table across from where DeMarcus was, Katie was behind me now paying for her food. There was no chairs or booths so we had to stand and eat. Personally me and DeMarcus had no problem with that but Katie on the other had was a little disappointed at that.
DeMarcus: I so can't wait until we get out of school. All this work we still have to do and school almost over.
Dejonté: Yeah I hear you. I guess I'm lucky I don't have to worry about that next year though.
DeMarcus: You still worried about that Ericson thing? Man I thought you said let's make this summer count?
Dejonté: I did but I don't know anymore. I always wanted to leave Chicago the right way. Not like this.
DeMarcus: Yeah bro I get you. We still got some time left here so let's do what we can, you hear me?
Dejonté: I got you.
I look over at Katie and she's still ordering her food. I look back at DeMarcus and thought to myself this is a good time to tell him about what happened yesterday.
Dejonté: Have heard anything on the news about a street race yesterday?
DeMarcus: Uhh...wait, yeah my Mom told me about that while she dropped me off at school today. What about it?
Dejonté: I was involved in that.
DeMarcus nearly choked on a fry hearing what I said.
DeMarcus: What do you mean you were involved?! You don't even know how to drive!
He shouted this which got Katie's and everyone else in the place attention. I pull DeMarcus close to me and whisper to him.
Dejonté: Hey you wanna shut up real quick so I won't get in trouble thanks.
I let go of him.
DeMarcus: Okay, okay my bad. But what happened? The way the news showed it looked really bad?
Dejonté: You remember Mace right?
DeMarcus: Yeah she's in the hospital. Wait how is she doing?
Dejonté: I don't know, I have to check on her later. Anyway, back to the story. Mace's Dad, Ryan, was driving the car and I was with him. We didn't know the other guy but he was from another set trying to claim territory.
DeMarcus: Wait a minute hold up. Others sets? We talking about gangs now?
Dejonté: Well I ain't talking about the sunset. All what happened was that they raced to settle who claimed what. We won but the other guy died crashing to the finish line.
DeMarcus: Wait so you're in a gang? When were you going to tell me this?
Dejonté: Right now. You hated it when I kept you out of the loop so...here I am coming out with it.
DeMarcus: But I thought it was like between your family or something, not gang wars.
Out of nowhere Katie puts her food next to me.
