My hands slide into my pockets. Even though I just saw her, I want to take out my phone and call her. I can't, though. Jennie will get suspicious. But is she really monitoring our phones? Maybe she just said that to put the thought in our mind to make sure we wouldn't contact each other. Whatever, what matters now is that we're going to take her down.

I laugh to myself. It's like she's a villain from a movie. Now that I think of it, my life does seem like a movie. The characters, everything's so cliche. I figure I should try and tell my parents about me and Irene before we try and bring her back.

I open the door to my house. My father is staying home today while my mother works all day. That's how it usually is. My mother is the worker of the family, she's won the most awards when it comes to being a doctor.

My parents' marriage was arranged, like most in my area are. My father praises my mother's side of the family since that's where we get most of our power from. I know if anyone's going to take the new information lightly, it'll be my dad. I walk to his office and knock on the door. "Hi."

"Hi," he says, not turning around. "You can come in. Where did you go? Where's Irene?"

"She's at one of her part-time jobs," I lie. "I went to visit her."

"Oh," he says. "She has more than one part-time job?"

"Yeah," I say. "Hey, can I talk to you about something?"

"Sure," he says, putting down his papers. He spins around in his chair. "What's wrong?"

I swallow. "You don't care who I date, right?"

"Aren't you dating Mark?" he asks.

I freeze. Right. He doesn't know about that. "About that, Mark and I-"

"You two don't like each other, do you?" he asks.

How did he know? "Um-"

"I knew it was a bad idea," he says. "I told your mother that you can't force two people who have no chemistry to date. The only thing you two have in common is the fact that you lived in Canada. Was that what you were worried about? I don't care who you date, as long as they're not weird if you know what I mean."

"That's not it," I say. "There's something else."

"What is it?" he asks.

I try to look directly into his eyes, but I can't imagine how he'll react once I tell him. I take a deep breath. "Nevermind. You answered my question. Thank you. I can break up with Mark now."

I turn around to leave, but he stops me. "No, that wasn't it. What do you need to ask me? You can tell me anything, you know. I'm your father. You're not pregnant, are you? Then I'm not your father."

I laugh nervously. He's trying to light up the mood. He stands up and walks toward me, putting his hands on my shoulders. "What is it?"

"You said you don't care who I like, right?' I ask.

"Yes, but with some-"

"What if I like a girl?" I say, shutting my eyes and looking down. My father doesn't say anything but he removes his hands from my shoulders. He's mad, isn't he? I can just tell him I was asking a hypothetical question because I didn't say that I did like a girl.

"Do you?" he asks after a while.

My head stays facing the ground. "What if I do?"

He lifts my chin. "I don't care. You're still my daughter."

I feel tears well up in my eyes. "You don't care?"

"Of course I don't," he says, pulling me into a hug. "You're my daughter. You can be whoever you want to be. Don't be afraid, okay?"
