I sit in the hospital room with my mother, chatting to her about the past few days. She can sit up properly now, and she's been going for walks around the hospital with someone there to make sure nothing happens.
"How are you and Wendy?" my mother asks suddenly.
"What?" I ask. "What do you mean?"
"How are you holding up with everything?" she asks. "You seem to be very close to her, so she must know a lot about your private life."
I swallow. "Yeah. We're close. We're fine, everything's fine, you know?"
"Good," my mother says. "Is there anything else about her you'd like to tell me?"
I shake my head. "No, there's nothing else going on. She's going to pick us up from the hospital tomorrow around ten, so make sure to be awake, okay?"
"Okay, dear," she says. "Could you please get me some water?"
"Yeah, of course," I say, getting up.
That conversation was odd. Did she figure something out? She asked me if there was anything else about Wendy I wanted to tell her, but why would she ask that in the first place? Oh, God, does she know? I don't think it would make a difference if she knew or not, because if she does know then she was okay with it based on the way she was acting.
I'm hungry too, so I head down to the third floor to grab myself something to eat with my mother's water. I stand in line for a Starbucks so I can get a muffin. Once I get the muffin, I head to the water fountain and grab a paper cup to fill up with water.
I feel someone tap my shoulder. "Hey."
I jump and turn around. It's Eric. I sigh. "Hello."
"Where's Wendy?" he asks.
"She's not here," I say, turning back around. "Why? Do you want to show her another promise?"
"No," he says. "I want to apologize. I was being a dick."
"You were," I say, filling up the cup. "Is that it? I can tell her you're sorry."
"No, I just wanted to ask, does she really like Mark?" he asks. "She seemed like she was lying. She's not a very good liar."
He's right. Wendy and I aren't good at lying. We couldn't lie to save our lives. I swallow. "Yeah, she does."
"I talked to Mark the other day, you know," Eric says, grabbing a cup. "He said they were dating but then they broke up."
"Why would you talk to Mark?" I ask. "Why didn't you just accept her decision? She doesn't want to go out with you."
"She lied, I wanted to find out why," he says. "I wanted to find out who she likes. I think I might have an idea, though." He winks at me.
I give him a look. "What? Who?"
"You suck at lying," Eric says, laughing. "You know, I saw you two last week. I forgot my cup of water at the table so I came back to get it, but you two were sitting there up against each others' faces so I figured I'd come back later."
Worry hits me like a bullet. He saw us? Oh my God, what if someone else saw us? I shouldn't have kissed her. I'm such an idiot. "I-"
"Don't worry," he says. "My lips are sealed. I won't say anything about her when I debut. I'm not usually like this, but I like Wendy a lot, you know? I was so devastated when she left to move back to Korea, so when I saw her here I got so excited. I hope you two are happy together, though."
He pats my shoulder and walks off. I stare. I don't know what just happened. It seems like he's done going after Wendy, though, so I guess that's a win for both of us.
