Phone calls

That evening Finn was in Elise's room.They were staring at the answers they were given to the questions they asked.
"Elise,we need to think of who the kids will like and who will be the best teacher." Scanning the profiles for each interviewee
Finn declared "They were all so good.How can we decide?"
The trapdoor opened and Elise's mom popped her head up.
"I thought you two might want a snack and a drink? What are you working on?" Elise's mom looked at the boy and her daughter who were staring at the sheets of paper on the bed. Elise had her head in her hands.
"If you tell me then I can help."
Elise sighed.
"Mom,y'know how we run the detention centre?And lots of kids go to it?"
"Yes,honey,you told me.What's the issue?"
"We can't run it if we go to Juilliard so we need to pick others to run it for us.Except we can't decide on who."
Elise's mom smiled.She could see their decision had to be perfect.
"Well,who do you think would be best running it?"
"We like Toby and Mia best. They seemed to have the most practicality with the kids.They seem right."
Elise's mom laughed.
"You need to tell them this and tell the others that they don't have a job. Might I suggest a phone call?"
Elise nodded and shared a grin that matched Finn's.
"Yeah,we can do that.Can we borrow your phone?"
Elise's mom smiled.
"Of course you can."
As soon as she was gone Finn turned to Elise.
"We need to decide when they're starting. So that we can tell them. And we need to give them the keys to the lockup.Umm..go grab pen and paper and we can plot it out.We'll call them tomorrow."
Elise grabbed the items off of her desk and they sat down to plan together.
By the end of the evening they had decided what to tell each applicant and when they'd start.
"Do you want to call the boys and I'll call the girls?" Finn asked"that way we can both give bad and good news to people"
"Yeah,we can do that."
Finn held his fist out for a fist bump which Elise gave.
"Pound it!"

The next day after school they called up Mia.
"Hello?" Came the slightly nervous voice belonging to Mia.
"Hi,am I speaking to Mia?"
"Yes?"
"Finn and I have decided that you are one of our two replacements.We expect you to do a really good job. We'll leave a list of rules we follow and our protocol for things at the centre.You should use the kids wisely as they know a lot of the rules."
"Two replacements?Who's the other person?"
"We thought you might like to meet each other before starting so tomorrow can you meet us at the centre?We also need to go over a few things with you like fire hazards and other important stuff. Is it alright that you'll be working with a guy?"
"Umm sure.No problems." Mia felt confident that she'd like whoever they chose.
"See you tomorrow then!Well done."
Elise put the phone down on Mia.She passed it to Finn who was going to call the boys.
"Have you got Toby's number?" Elise asked.
Finn nodded and entered it into the phone.
"H,hi t,this is Toby speaking." The boy's voice was nervous and quiet.
"Hi,Toby,it's Finn from the detention centre.We decided that you should be one of our replacements. We are expecting you to work to a really high standard but don't worry we have rules and protocols which we can give you. Umm...are you alright with working with a girl?"
"As long as she's alright with me?"
Finn sighed in relief.
"Ok that's great! We want you two to meet really soon to get to know each other and so that Elise and I can give you a rundown of what happens in certain situations,so can you meet us tomorrow after school at the centre?"
"I guess,I just need to tell my parents is all.This isn't a joke is it?"
"Nope,we'll see you tomorrow then goodbye."
"Goodbye!I can't believe this!"
Finn put the phone down and grinned at Elise.
"He's excited I think."
"Let's hope they get along."
"It's time to call the ones who didn't get the jobs.Who should we call first?"
"Lily.Ben I think will throw a tantrum where Lily might just accept it."
"Well,your doing the girls.Got Lily's number?" At Elise's distracted nod,distracted as she was putting the number into the phone.She pressed the call button and was surprised when Lily picked up on the first ring.
"Hello! This is Lily! Is this about the job at the detention centre?"
"Hi,Lily. Yes it is,we're afraid you didn't get the job."
"........Oh.Ok.Can I ask why not?"
"I'm afraid we can't disclose that info.You did well but not well enough.Goodbye." Elise put the phone down.She turned to stare at Finn who raised his hands in mock surrender.
"HOW ON EARTH DID YOU CONVINCE ME TO CALL HER?" Finn took a step back.
"It felt terrible Finn! I can't believe you made me do that!" Elise said tears forming in hers eyes.
"Ok,ok, sorry Elise.I won't ever make you do anything like that again.I promise." He looked her straight in the eyes.
"Well it's your turn.Call Ben remember? Got the number?"
"You are mean,but yes.Pass the phone here."
Finn typed in Ben's number and before he pressed the dial button he whispered.
"You speak if it gets too much ok?"
Elise nodded.Finn dialled.
"Hello is that Ben speaking?"
"Yes,it is.You don't need to tell me I was awesome at the interview,I know,Thanks so much for deciding to hire me-"
"Actually Ben it's quite the opposite.See, others were better than you. You were a great guy but you were entirely unsuitable for the role.We're sorry to tell you that you didn't get the job."
"WHAT?BUT I'M GREAT!-" Finn held the phone away from his ear and passed it to Elise who answered it calmly.
"Hello,Ben? You need to stop yelling at me.There were only two positions and they have been filled. Thank you for your time." Elise blurted it out quickly and put the phone down with a quiet click.
She turned to face Finn who had a face of thunder.
