Ashley's POV:
I reached the hospital within fifteen minutes. I hurried to my office to see Tania waiting for me.
She handed me the patient's profile including every little detail about his health.
I took some time to read everything on it and went for his MRI and CT scan results.
PA system called my name, "Doctor Ruth to ICU 4 please, Doctor Ruth to ICU 4."
ICU 4 is for my department. I took all the files and rushed over to the elevator. I reached ICU 4 when I saw Professor Harvey with two of his residents.
"Professor." I bowed a little.
"Doctor Ruth, guess you heard my call." He nodded at the response of my bow, "You got details?"
"Yes professor," I replied.
"Medical team's meetings start in five minutes. Come with me," he said.
I was nervous. No, I was mortified.
He was practically my idol here. One of the most renowned and respected neurosurgeons in the world. Operating an AC, moreover with HIM? What if I messed up?
I followed him.
The meeting was short.
He already planned out how we should proceed. The patient had a tumor in his motor cortex area which is causing recurrent epileptic seizures.
But the patient was a professional pianist in a jazz group. So Professor Harvey wanted the patient to play piano during the whole procedure so that we don't mess up with his fine motor skills in that sensitive area of his brain during removing the tumor.
After the meeting, we were said to proceed with the process and prep ourselves.
"Dr. Ruth, how confident are you about this???" before leaving professor Harvey asked me.
"I practiced on simulation, professor, practically every day. But I know that's not enough for real cases," I answered.
"We can do that. I want you to be calm, there's no need to be nervous," Professor assured me, "I will be there you know." He smiled nicely.
Yup! that's exactly my concern!
I nodded and came back to my office. I again ran through the scans and had a coffee.
Tania came in, "Professor asked if you had anything for lunch, if not, you better take some glucose shots or a chocolate bar. It's gonna be a hella long operation. "
"I just had my lunch, Tania. Did they prepped the patient yet??" I asked.
"Yes, you should go now," she replied.
I got up from my chair. Changed into my scrubs. I should have had done this right after I came here, but I didn't have enough time.
I went onto the OR block, washed my hands, and waited till the nurse helped me put on my surgery gown and every accessory. She saw my pendant and removed it.
"Really? You have a pendant with you? I'd never seen you wear one before!" she said smiling.
"Cause I don't," I smiled back, "It's a gift".
"Whoever had given that, I bet that one is loaded! You see, it's Tiffany's !!!" she exclaimed.
"Well, keep it safe. Will you?" I asked.
She nodded happily.
I went into the operating room.
The patient was already prepped, a miniature piano was waiting in front of him.Professor came no longer after that.
The anesthetist performed the routine procedure asking the patient's details and gave us a green signal.
Professor handed me the marker, "Care to mark and start the incision, mate?" he was well known for his pirates jokes around here.
I smiled, "Aye Aye, Sir."
