L E X I
I woke up on a hospital bed. The bright lights hurt my eyes when I looked around.
The room was empty and I was the only one in it. I was wearing a hospital gown and was lying down.
My head felt like it was on fire.
What happened?
The last thing I remember was running to duck under a table.
The grenade.
Where was everyone else? Were they okay?
I looked at the desk next to me and saw that my phone was sitting on it. I slowly stretched out my arm and picked it up.
I looked through my previous calls list and found Sam's number from the first day that we met.
I dialled the number and waited anxiously for him to pick up.
"The number you have dialled has not been recognised."
What? Why isn't it working.
I tried again but it just said the same thing.
I was about to slam my phone into the floor when the door to my room opened.
It was the girl from yesterday.
What was her name? Rachel? No. Rebecca! No that's not right either.
"Riley Thomas." She said walking into the room. Her black hair was still in a ponytail like the first time I saw her.
"What are you doing here? Where am I? Where are my" I took a deep breath in. "Where are my stepbrothers?" I asked.
"Easy tiger. You're in a hospital but don't worry your safe." She said sitting down on a chair.
"Your step brothers are gone." She said and my mouth fell open. They were dead? All of them?
"Not dead. Just missing." She said and I sighed in relief. I don't know why but I did. I shouldn't have. I hate them. All of them. They were going to leave me there.
"I'm Riley Thomas and all you need to know about me is that I am on your side and won't hurt you." She said and I saw a very faint trace of a smile on her face.
"My- My mother. Who was she?" I asked.
"Your mother was Maria Vasquez. She was married to a man who was the leader of a large gang called Esterlina."
"Esterlina?" I whispered the name to myself.
"The leader of the gang was not known. Only two people knew who he really was. One of them was your mother." She said.
"That's not possible. My mum was married to a stupid man called Alan." I said.
"They never got married. He is not your father anyway. Your mother had met him and decided to tell him you were his child to try and keep you out of harms way." She said.
Wait what?
My mum. Was married. To a gang leader? I was the kid of a gang leader.
The only good thing that's come out of this is that Alan really isn't my dad.
I still didn't understand it.
My mum decided to give me to a stranger to keep me out of harms way?
None of this made sense.
"I know it's a lot to take in so I will leave you to sleep on it." Riley said and she left the room.
It sure was a lot to take in.
