After flying for two days, we were a little more than halfway to Colorado. Robert had packed plenty of food, but we still stopped at a store or two to pick up extra. During the day we had to fly higher than the average airplane so that we wouldn't be seen by the people below us. It was cold, but when we passed over any kind of countryside, we flew lower and occasionally flew only a few feet from the ground and scared some of the animals. Now however, it was dark, and Robert and I were flying high above a bright and major city, although I had no idea what city it was. Even though it was dark and cloudy tonight, Robert said we had to fly high, for this city never slept. We'd been flying for twelve straight hours now, and my wings were beginning to ache from the past two days.
From in front of me I hear a long sigh.
"Hey Luv?"
"Yeah, Robert?"
"Do you want to rest for a while?"
"Yeah, that would be great...my wings are aching...but where are we going to go?"
Robert motioned for me to fly next to him. I flapped my wings and came up alongside him.
"That's where we're going"
He pointed to a tall, not shabby but obviously not in use, building.
"Oh my..." I whispered to myself.
"Yup, it's quite the place"
"Ha, it sure looks like it..."
I silently wondered when Robert had made this trip before, considering he knew exactly which building to go to.
We picked up speed and quickly came up on the building we'd be staying in. I landed on the roof and Robert came down next to me.
"Don't worry...there's a few space heaters inside and we can sleep in the sleeping bag"
He had definitely been here before. But, I was grateful for the promise of warmth and sleep. I was also grateful for the fact that Robert had bought a big sleeping bag for the both of us the night before. He had stopped at a corner store and "bought" a pro-campers sleeping bag while I waited on the roof. Now, we descended from the fire escape into the top floor. Sure enough, there were space heaters, but as we climbed in through the half open window, I was sure that I caught a glimpse of a brown and white pair of wings on the other side of the very large, and very empty room.
"Robert..?"
"Yes, Luv?"
"Are there any other...people here?"
"Quite possibly...this is kind of a harpie reststop...but normally, no one's here"
"O-okay then"
I kept my voice to a whisper, not wanting to attract any attention from anyone who might be here.
"Do you wanna go to bed for now, Luv? I can keep watch for you."
"Yes please..." I murmured with a yawn.
Robert quietly laid out the sleeping bag on the floor, a little ways away from the window. I took off my shoes and put them with Robert's things next to the backpack. I slid into the bag as quietly as I could, and placed my head on the pillow that Robert had made from a balled-up shirt. Robert seemed like a caring person, even though he was the one who turned me in the first place. He spread out his wings out and I felt a slight breeze as he watched over me while I slept.
