[Gerard]
Just as I sat down in my seat at the back, of course, the fire alarm went off. I jumped in surprise and rolled my eyes a little when I realized I had to get back up again. I followed everyone else in my class as our teacher barked out orders on where to meet outside.
As we all rushed slowly through the halls, I suddenly got shoved hard into another kid next to me. We both doubled back, causing our bodies to clash against the crowded hall around us. This made a chain reaction as we sent people stumbling in all directions. I heard someone laugh cold-heartedly. Most likely the person who shoved me.
When we all gained balance, I let myself glare at the idiot who caused this temporary mess. Luckily he'd moved on or I would've received a hard grab by the shirt and a spit in the face. I turned around to apologize to the kid I fell into. Turns out, the "kid" was, of all people, fucking Frank. My literal boyfriend.
"Woah, sorry b– uh... Frank," I started in surprise. I caught myself before I said 'babe.' I then looked around us to see if anyone heard, but everyone was too frantic to notice. I mean, why would anyone care about losers like us, anyway.
"Haha, it's fine," Frank laughed as he noticed me catching myself. He then smiled reassuringly which I ended up returning by grinning shyly at the ground.
We walked silently for the rest of the way. When we got to the A wing meeting point, we had to part as we were assigned locations by class number. Frank wasn't in my class but his room was just three doors down from mine, which was why he was able to catch up to me in the first place. Our assigned locations set us apart a little far, but we could still see each other pretty well.
As I was standing there, I noticed some smoke rising in the distance. At first, I just passed the thought. But, when it dawned on me, I tensed. I was so used to the alarm dragging us outside because of casualties that I didn't even wonder if maybe it was real this time. We all thought it was just another fire drill or someone smoking in the bathroom, but it turns out, it was a real fire this time. I looked away from the building to find Frank, who was also looking at me, shocked. Then, I saw his lips move to mouth a word. For a long time, I thought he was trying to say 'rain' at first until he moved his hands to mock a head explosion.
"Ohhh," I said quietly as I finally realized. Frank was trying to say 'Ray.' The 'head explosion' was Frank imitating Ray's fro. I totally didn't even realize. The smoke was coming from somewhere near Ray's chem class! I widened my eyes in alarm. My classmates were worried as well as I heard them chatting nervously. Sirens were wailing. In the distance, firefighters were trying to put out the fire as quickly as they could.
My hand suddenly flashed to my pocket and I pulled out my phone. I had to text Ray! I looked up and saw that Frank was doing the same.
"Ray," I typed.
"are you safe?"
"did you get hurt?"
I waited for a reply. A couple of minutes later, nothing. Frank shook his head too when we met eye contact. This worried me a lot. Either Ray was dead or his phone got lost in the flames. I tried to ignore the worst outcome. No. Ray wasn't dead. There was no ambulance.
I thought about him for a second. Maybe he started the fire? He was clumsy at times. No. If the fire started from his class, it wouldn't have been him because he knows his shit. He actually pays attention in school and he actually understands and does really well academically. Ha, couldn't be me. So, it was definitely someone else. Ray's can be clumsy but not if it's for school. Fuck, I wish I could be Ray for a day. He was such a fast learner too. Also, Ray was just so eager to learn and. . . heh. In other words, he was a nerd. Not to be offensive though. Also, he wasn't exactly a teacher's pet, but he was dangerously close to being one. That's one reason why he was bullied.
