The Calling of a Cub
"rani... Rani... RANI!"
"Ahh!" Rani woke up seeing Kion in front of her face trying to wake her up. "Kion?" She looked towards the exit of their cave. "Isn't it a little early to get up?"
"Well last night, you did say that you wanted to get up early tomorrow morning." Kion chuckled.
Rani yawned. "Yeah, you're right. Just, give me a moment."
"Okay, I'll be right outside." Kion left the cave.
Rani rubbed her eye, got up, and stretched. She let out another loud yawn. In the process of creating a loud yawn, she noticed her mother's gem safely placed on the cave floor.
She picked it up with her mouth and wrapped it around the base of her front paw. When she finished, she exited the cave, looking for Kion.
"Kion? Where are you?"
"Up here!"
Rani listened to her king's voice. The voice came from up above. She saw the golden lion sitting on a branch of a tall tree.
"How'd you get up there?" Rani asks.
"Oh, it was simple. I used an ancient technique called... 'climbing'." Kion joked.
Rani snickered. "Yeah, sure. 'ancient technique'." Rani walked up to the base of the tree and started to climb one branch at a time.
She was getting close to the branch Kion was on.
"Need some help?" Kion offered.
"Ngh, yeah." She was on the branch right underneath Kion.
Kion got a grip on Rani and pulled her up. Rani sat closely next to her king.
"So... what are you doing up here?"
"I just wanted to see the Tree from above. It does not seem it's getting better."
Rani looked down on the Tree and saw the toxic liquid, that gives the Tree of Life's power, spreading out at a slow rate.
"It's been more than a week and we're still not able to find Kopa. And I'm about to lose hope." Kion says sadly.
"Oh, Kion. We will find him. Whatever it takes." Rani nuzzled under Kion's chin. "We can promise that, right?"
Kion felt Rani comforting him. He nuzzled his queen back. "Right," Kion says.
They continued nuzzling as the sun rose up. Rani pulled her head back from the hug and took a look at the sunrise. Kion peeked over at Rani and noticed her mother's gem wrapped around her front leg.
"What are you gonna do with your 'family heirloom'?" he asked.
"Hm, I'll probably give it to Makini so she could keep it safe fro-"
"ARRGGHHH!!! GAHHH!" Kion and Rani heard loud yelling in the distance.
"What was that?" Kion wondered.
"It sounded like Nila and Kala. And sounded like trouble!" Rani said shocked.
